SPORTS The View From Here The business of baseball In this day and age in baseball are teams buying their way into the World Series? Well, in our current times of the almighty dollar it is almost always the case. No team with a payroll under $4O million had a winning record this past sea son. Baseball team owners have to dig deep into their pockets to shell out money for the big name players if they want a shot at the World Series. It is not usually a question of how cheap the owner is, it is just that many teams sim ply cannot afford three or four All Star caliber players. How fair is it that the New York Yankees can spend almost $5O million more on their players than the Pittsburgh Pirates? The Yankees, who won the World Series in '99, had the high est payroll in Major League Base ball with a total of $58.5 million. That was over $3.5 million more Frostburg Penn State Behrend Pitt-Greensburg Lake Erie La Roche Pitt-Bradford Date Nov. 2 Opponent Buffalo State CROSS CO P - 1Y TR AMCC Cross Country Women's Championships Frostburg Penn State Behrend Pitt-Bradford La Roche AMCC Cross Country Men's Championships Frostburg 17 points Penn State Behrend 50 points La Roche 84 points Pitt-Bradford 96 points MCC Women's Cross Countr , All Jen Smialek Behrend Jessie Coe Behrend Kathy Perry Behrend 21:34 Betsy Voigt Behrend 22:14 Keri Lowman Behrend 72:10 Dennis Halaszynski Behrend 28: I I Mark Suroviec Behrend 28:53 Tyler Travis Behrend 28:57 For up to date sports scores around the clock call the SPORTSLINE at: (814) 898-6163 and Press 1 • , •., " UP C 0 MING EH R Men's Soccer November 6 AMC Tournament TBA @ Frostburg Women's Volleyball November 5-6 AMCC Tournament TBA (•) denotes AMCC opponent Bold letters denote home match than the next highest total. The top six spenders of 1999 were the Yankees, Orioles, White Sox, Indians, Braves, and the Rangers. Four of these six teams finished first in their division. The White Sox finished a close, very respectable second, while the Orioles are the exception to the rule, finishing fourth. In past years it's been proven that it doesn't matter how much Balti more spends; they have trouble putting together a winning season. None of them finished above third. It would be miraculous if they could contend. When teams cannot afford to spend the bucks and make big name acquisi tions, fans grow less and less interested in the team because they want to see players like McGwire, Griffey and Sosa at the ballpark. Winning is kind of important to a team. It is hard to be competitive when your lineup is full of scrubs day in and day out. This eventually leads to fans not showing up to the games and not bringing money to the franchise. After years of losing and not com ing close to the post-season, talk be gins about moving out of town. Own ers want to go elsewhere to recover lost money because this is a business, not just a sport anymore.
