This spring the theatre students at Be hrend will step out of the intimate Stu dio Theatre and into the Reed Build ing Commons for The Pirates of Penzance, a musical comedy that is a major change of pace from previous presentations. The production is set for 8:00 p.m. on March 26, 27,28, and 29 and at 2:30 p.m. on March 29. The major players include junior Geoffrey Pieper of Lake City, cast as the over protective patriarch, Major General Stanley; senior R.J. Frel in of New Galilee, Pa., as the Pirate King; junior Michael Lechner of Erie as Frederic, the pirate apprentice who is "the slave of duty"; sophomore Daryl Dambaugh Slippery Rock as the Seargeant of Po lice; freshman Gretchen Foust of Sugar Grove as Mabel, General Stanley's youngest daughter; and sophomore Lisa Perrette of Branchburg, N.J., as another of the Major General's daugh ters, Kate. Additional cast members serve as a chorus of General Stanley's other daughters, pirates, and policemen. In addition, International Paper has once again agreed to support this ini tiative. This will be the sixth summer of operation for MAPP/WISE at Be hrend. MAPP/WISE is a free summer program for academically talented Erie-area high school students. Stu dents enroll in a three-credit course with regularly enrolled University stu dents during the College's eight-week summer session. The MAPP portion of the program includes students from under-represented groups; the WISE portion of the program encourages fe male high school students to explore career possibilities in science, engi neerin,g, apt] etigipeeripg_techinlsly i Students participating in MAPP/WISE learn study techniques, test-taking strategies, and writing skills that help prepare them for academic study at the college level. Students in the program receive career counseling and attend special lectures and field trips con ducted by professionals in business, industry, human services, and educa tion. All applicants to the program must be high school juniors during the 1997-98 school year and have a grade point average of 2.75 or higher.
