This victory helped avenge an earlier loss to the talented netters from Fredonia. The Lady Lions achieved their redemption with an 8-1 rout on Fredonia's home turf. Cross country runners win at Laßoche by Matt Plfria Sports Editor jhalMko The Penn State-Behrend cross country team had another outstanding showing this weekend at the Laßoche Invitational. Both the men's and women's teams finished the day with impressive victories over a number of teams. The win was the first for the women's cross country program and the men's third in the last four meets. "We ran well and had good times on a very difficult course," said Coach John Drew. She attributed the team's success to the mental preparation imposed on the team by Coach Chuck Keenan. Everybody got together and ran well," said Drew. A core of four freshman runners joined Michic to power the Lady runners. Sheila Rivera and Joet Kolano finished in the top five at third and fourth place for the Lions. "I'm really proud of the way the team bounced back in this match we showed true heart today," said Keenan. The Lady Lions enjoyed a well deserved break from the world of tennis over the weekend. They returned to action on Monday for a showdown with local rival Edinboro. Freshman Christine Chan overcame several questionable line calls to gain a victory in sixth singles. Men's Soccer team defeats Grove City, 1-0 by Matt Naga Sports Editor It was rivalry day for much of the men's soccer team on Wednesday as Grove City came into to Erie to battle with the Lions. "Our upperclassmen are upset with last year's performance, they would like to prove themselves," said assistant coach Chuck Baranich before the game. The Lions then went out on the field and proved to Grove City who the better team was. Powered by an Andrew Kariotis goal in the 13th minute of action Etehrend held on for a 1-0 win. The win was even bigger for one member of the team. Grove City transfer Aaron Pentz helped defeat his former teammates by assisting on the Kariotis goal. Four freshman runners also enabled the men's team to earn the .*V)IY• .41reg Cooper, Tyler Travis and Dennis Halaszynski followed Huether's run with third, fourth and fifth place finishes respectively. Chris Reed also finished in the top ten in eighth place The performance in the hot and humid weather of Saturday's meet by both teams can be attributed to their fine conditioning. "Ordinarily heat in October is not a concern. If you've been running in cold weather, warm weather can really fatigue you," said Drew. Another freshman Jamie Brubaker rallied to win her singles effort in three sets, alter a heartbreaking doubles loss. "After doubles I had to re-focus my energy to the task at hand, it took me a while to get going, but once I did I was on fire," said Brubaker. Unfortunately these two wins were all that the Lady Lions could "It felt great. It's a big boost for us to beat a huge rival," said Pentz. The win gave Behrend a 7-4 record and put them in line for another winning season. The win over Grove City will hopefully complete a turn around for the Lions that began during a 2-1 double-overtime loss to Mount Union on Saturday. "We played hard, could have played better, but the effort was there," said Baranich. Travis Lang scored the lone Behrend goal on a penalty kick that fbmai the overtime session. Although they lost, the performance by the Lions was a promising sign for the struggling team. The Lions next game will be this Saturday when they travel to Oberlin College. Both teams of runners will have plenty of opportunity to build on this weekend's outstanding performance with two more matches before the November 1 meet.
