An audience member asked her a question about where she gets the ideas for her poems. She responded, "My ideas for poems come from just walking around the world." Another matter brought up was the strong blue collar feminist voice in her poetry which is often perceived as a masculine voice. To this she responded, "I was hoping this was a feminist voice. I think that Mad River is a feminist, working class book, but it's also optimistic." When asked about what she thought about Penn S tate- Behrend, she stated that "It's very calm and comforting, very unlike the University of Pittsburgh." Dr. Mark Willhardt presented a lecture on the "Poetics of Rap" during the HRPC forum on Thursday, September 18. Dr Willhardt. an assistant professor of English at The University of St Thomas in Minneapolis-St Paul. Minnesota has his PhD. in literature. He has done extensive work with the poetry of popular music, concentrating on rap in the last two years. He stated that, "Right now the most active, prevalent form of poetry is rap." Willhardt gave background to the concept of rap as poetry by telling the audience about the roots of rock, reggae, and hip hop. What made Willhardt's speech particularly memorable was the way he involved the audience. Every five minutes, the audience would wave their arms to let Willhardt know how much time he had left. After Willharclt spoke, the rap group, "The Lazy G's" performed several songs. The words used in some of their songs, such as. "nigger," "bitch," "faggot," and "pussy," started discussion about language and the connotations of words like these. Members of "The Lazy G's" felt that words like these should not offend anyone, because they are not necessarily aimed at certain groups. This comment sparked debate about the power of words. "The Lazy O's" also stated that 'SC they wouldn't be offended if someone, no matter if they were a friend or not, called them a r_ "nigger." Others disagreed, I( noting that "nigger" has been taken back by the black 1,,* community and used as a term of Th friendship among blacks.
