How do you feel about the recent article on Greek Life? "I did not think that it was very fair to the brothers and sisters. If there was going to be an article on them they should have been interviewed also." Amy Karenbauer, 03 Accounting "I hated the article! I was appalled and mortified. Not only did the article bash the Greeks on campus, but it also created a lot of conflict among the Greeks. The editor obvi ously has no idea what it is to be Greek and of course he can't see the good things we do, it's easier and more interesting to create contro versy." "I feel the author was on the outside looking in and he did not have a clue. He was very biased." "It made me re-establish my position on whether or not to join a fraternity." Hortures speech was one that led many students to think of ways they can help the community as well as benefit from it. The evening began with Maya Angelou's "Human Family," read by Jennifer Fontecchio. The other highlights of the evening included a Scottish dance by the Highland Dancers accompanied by bagpipes. The inspirational speech by Gary Horton. the performance of the Highland Dancers and the fellowship of students from numerous ethnic groups is one way to somewhat close the gap that exists between cultures. Robert Sped, Assistant Professor of Political Science, aid Alan Michael Parker, Assistant Professor of English, are advising/teaching the Collegian. Parker said, "I began discussions last summer regarding The Collegian; I joined the organization in August as Faculty Advisor." Sped was asked by Humanities and Social Sciences division heal Roberta Salper to help with The Collegian, in the Spring 1996 semester. Sped said that, as a student, he wrote for his college newspaper. "However, when I was asked to help with The Collegian, I thought it might be a nice opportunity once again to be involved in the teaching and advising of news production, so I accepted despite the time commitment involved," said Speel. Parker said, "My goals [for The Collegian] we simple: to help the newspaper meet its journalistic and literary obligations—to be well considered and well-written—while performing its vital function within the Behrend community." Speel said, "As a side issue, I think that The Collegian has the opportunity to make a difference in the Erie community, and I am hopeful that the changes instituted this year will make this difference. "Also, as a First Amendment stalwart, I am wholly committed to the newspaper's Freedom of the Press, in all its guises," continued Parker. Sped says that the following changes have been made: 1) NEWS—In the news section, students have chosen sews beats in which they will be responsible for all coverage of one aspect of campus life," said Speel. Also, continued Speel, The Collegian is now subscribing to two national wire services. 2) EDITORIAL—The editorial page will include an "Eye on Erie" column, with commentary on whats on around Behrend, said Spec'. Also, the editorial page will include a weekly opinion piece stating the views of the editorial staff, as well as political cartoons. 3) FEATURES—SpeeI said that Features will include stories about life at Behrend, and life in Erie, as well as music, movie, theater, and food/restaurant reviews. 4) SPORTS—SpeeI said, 'The sports section will have more extensive coverage of individual varsity sports and may have a box scores listing that will include results from both intramural and varsity contests." Sped said, "My hope is that everyone at Behrend will find plenty of material of interest to read the paper, and that the paper will be a rewarding experience both for the students involved in producing it, and for all of its readers." Alan Parker has a B.A. cum laude in English and History from Washington University in St. Louis, and an M.F.A. in writing from Columbia University. Robert Sped received a B.A. in Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and a ph.D in Government from Cornell University.
