Lady Lions win annual VB tournament by Justin Bender Collegian Staff This past weekend, the Lady Lions showed great pride in winning their own tournament In all four matches, Behrend won 12 out of the 14 games they played. Behrend (12-14) started of the tournament on the right foot Friday by dominating Notre Dame of Ohio 15-1,15-9,15-11. Jill Yamma, Tina Mulvin, Laura Perry, and Jen Bargiband each added a goal for (he Lady Lions as Maryann Rupp and Sean Morelli combined to shut out Laßoche. The second match of the evening was much tougher for the women. They faced a strong team in Elizabethtown (17-9). After a long five set battle, the Lions proved too much for the visitors to handle 10- 15,15-5,5-15,15-10,15-12. The final game of match play saw Behrend face Goucher College, Saturday afternoon. "It was fun, a good first year experience on the college level" said freshman Emily Rubin. Coach Chuck Keenan agreed "We took our lumps but at least we have something to build on next year." Freshman Tanni Podrasky ended her season on a positive note at the Cardinal Invitational. "Tanni played well in making the quarterfinals of the B flight singles" said Coach Keenan. Podrasky teamed with Carley Gwinn to reach the quarterfinals in the B-flight of doubles action. "I think I played pretty well, I was consistent throughout the year" said Podrasky. "We have a young team, next year we should be pretty good know that everyone has a year under their belt” said junior Shanna Cotti. Among young players on the team are Jill Kacprowicz who led the team in singles victories with seven. Kacprowicz and freshman Emily Rubin, teammates at Villa, teamed at the college level to win three of their six doubles matches this fall. "When they gel comfortable with poaching and movement they will be much more successful in doubles play" said Keenan. “It was fun, a good first year experience on the college level. ” Emily Rubin Juniors Shanna Cotti and Carley Gwinn along with freshman Jill Kacprowicz, Emily Rubin, Tanni Podrasky and Kelli McCauliff will return to the courts over spring break when they travel to Hilton Head, South Carolina to start their spring season.
