Page 8 "Animal Crackers" still playing by Adria Kovaly Collegian Staff Last week you got the preview, this week you get the review, and let me tell you, this is one story I'm glad I did a follow-up on. "Animal Crackers," the musical comedy showing at the Roadhouse Theater is a definite plus in my book. The show is an adaptation of the Marx Brothers' performance of the same name, but whether you're a Marx Brothers' fan or not, you're sure to have an enjoyable evening. Each of the actors playing the Brothers was wonderfully humorous in their role, even Ryan McGaughey, who plays the "unfunny" Zeppo. Charles Corritore delivers Groucho's barbs and one-liners to a T, right Holly to appear Lauren Holly Makes Leap Over "Fences" To Big Screen By lan Spelling College Press Service Like it or not, Lauren Holly realizes she may be more widely recognized as Jim Carrey's girlfriend rather than Lauren Holly, actress. But not for long. Sure, Holly is dating one of Hollywood's biggest, most bankable stars, yet the young actress is working hard to make a name for herself on her own terms. For several years, Holly has played a vital role in the respected TV series "Picket Fences," every so often squeezing in small roles in such films as "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story" and "Dumb and Dumber," during which she met Carrey. Now, Holly, who was born and raised in the upstate New York town of Geneva and thought she might become a lawyer while attending Sarah Lawrence College, is setting her sights a ACROSS 1 Cook 5 Oulddy: abbr. 9 Art deco Nueva tor 13 Take it easy 14 Radng lengths 18 Came out wall 17 Too 18 Bout locale 19 Bio-hearted 20 Squint at 21 Last letter 22 the 13th 24 Neck and neck 26 Tide of respect 27 Mended 30 Morningstar" 34 At attention 35 Opera singer Callas 36 Actor Byrnes 37 WaPcing stick 38 Inklings 39 Brazilian soccer star 40 Have being 41 Garden flower 42 Hilo of Rome down to the flick of his cigar. And watch out when Louis Cantoni (Chico) and Howard Savoy (Harpo) are on stage together--it usually means they're up to trouble of some sort, anything from card sharking to stealing a statue. Savoy also does an excellent job of using Harpo's traditional method of communicating, the horn. It's amazing how a simple squeak can convey so many different things! In addition to the biting humor and puns delivered by the Brothers, the comedic facial expressions on the other characters as they react to them are priceless. Speaking of reactions, the way the actors use improv to cover the rare slip-up, you'd swear it was pan of the script. The musical numbers that fit bit higher. She currently can be seen in the ensemble film "Beautiful Girls," and come March 1, costars with Kelsey Grammer in "Down Periscope." Holly portrays Darian Smalls in "Girls," a comedy-draina about a bunch of friends—among them Timothy Hutton, Matt Dillon, Mira Sorvino, Rosie O'Donnell, Martha Plimpton and Michael Rapaport-- gathering together in their small hometown for a 10- year high school reunion. Smalls is the rather bitchy, now-married former prom queen, who still sleeps around with Dillon, her boyfriend during their shared glory days at school. The actress knows Smalls won't be popular with audiences, and that's fine with her. In fact, that was the whole idea. "Let's be honest and say it wasn't very long ago that I chose my movies based on what jobs I got. Now, it's getting to be a little different. I wanted 'Beautiful Girls' very badly," explains Holly, a fun and forthright interview subject, Entertainment into the plot are well done, including the famous "Hooray for Captain Spaulding," though sometimes the lyrics were hard to pick up on, either because of the many singers or the quickness of the tempo. I will add that the musicians did an exceptional job as well. "Animal Crackers" is an immensely enjoyable show -that had me laughing just about all the way through. I highly recommend it, especially at the end of a hectic week. The actors are exceptional in their roles and the humor they deliver is certain to lift your spirits. If you do plan on attending, I also recommend you do it soon, since the show only runs through March 10. Tickets can be purchased at the door, or reserved by calling 456-5656. in "Girls" during a conversation at a Los Angeles hotel. "I read the script and thought it was so well written. I knew it had the potential to be kind of a hip, chic movie to be a pan of, which can really help one's career. "Then, I lobbied for Darian because I wanted to do something different than I'd done before, which might help me, too. So, I went to (writer-director) Ted Demme at the audition and said, "There are great women's roles in this, and I want to play the bed girl.' He said, 'O.K.,' but I think he was kind of surprised I chose that one. I got it, and I'm glad." After completing "Beautiful Girls," Holly immediately moved on to the comedy "Down Periscope," then returned to "Picket Fences," where her character, Deputy Sheriff Maxine Stewart, has not only changed her hair color from red to Holly's natural blond, but happens to be dating a cross-dresser. The actress is hopeful that the low- rated "Fences" will be back on CBS and "Periscope next season and sounds quite high on her "Periscope" adventure. "Kelsey Grammer is the commander of a submarine, and I am the rust woman ever commissioned to a sub," she says. "I am the Lt. Dive Officer and, in my mind, I should be the commander. Basically, we're a misfit crew that goes AWOL and becomes a bunch of pirates. It's an incredibly heartwarming story. It reminds me of 'Stripes' or 'MASH' in that there are some tense situations along with the comedy. I've seen it, and it's really sweet." Things are still sweet between herself and Carrey, reports the actress, despite his megastardom, despite his $2O million-per-film ca ary, and despite her having to live in the shadow his celebrity status casts. "Where most people in a relationship work on each other, we work on private time. How do we get two hours alone?" she wonders aloud. "It's different. I don't think it's changed him. Currently, Holly is shooting the thriller "Turbulence" with Ray Liotta and then will star in another film project called "The Best Woman." There's no doubt that Holly has come a long way from the TV commercials that got her started in acting and from her debut film role as the "albino girl" in the independent feature "Seven Minutes in Heaven." "You know how I look at my career? If I were going to be a surgeon, rd have my years of residency in a hospital and work unbelievable hours, completely filled with stress. Then," reveals Holly, "I'd eventually get through that and open a private practice."
