College Center Apartments 218-220-222 West Eighth Street Sports Women's tourney by Julie Stocker Collegian Siaff Don't you hate when teams miss foul shots? The distance never changes, the hoop doesn't move, and no one is playing defense except the four thousand screaming fans. Foul shots can mess up a whole game and mess up the whole season. Just like teams live and die by the three pointer, teams can live and die at the charity stripe. In the mist of upsets and missed foul shots in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship, there is another group of Sweet Sixteen teams that has been established. These teams are in the other locker room. The 1994-95 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament is quietly underway. Although it doesn't house the upsets and overtime totals that the men have achieved, the women's tournament still managed to serve up five first round upsets, one second round upset, and five overtime games through Monday. Leading the way for game of the tourney so far is fourth seed Alabama against fifth seed Duke. With 241 points scored in this contest through four overtime periods, the 'Tide finally prevailed with a 121-120 victory in the East. Picking up the only upset in the second round of action was N.C. State (21.9) over our beloved Lady Lions of Penn State, 76-74. The Lady Lions (26-5) were led by Angie Potthoff with 21 points, and N.C. State got the victory as Tammy Gibson broke the tie with 2.4 seconds left. So my question is: Who's going to win this darn thing? In my opinion, the number one seeds in each of the four brackets will be in Minneapolis for the Final Four. The list includes 29- 2 Tennessee, 27-2 Colorado, 26-6 Vanderbilt, and the undefeated future champions: the 29-0 Connecticut Huskies. You want to know why? 11l tell you why in two words: Rebecca Lobo. The 6'4" 180-pound Lobo has been tagged as the one to win women's player of the year honors. With her averages of 17.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, 3.4 blocks, and 3.8 assists for the year, she will be the one to led her Huskies to their first ever NCAA Championship. If you would please remember a time of a few weeks ago when both the men and the women UCONN teams were ranked the nations best. And now only one remains, and that one will end the season with 32 wins, and not a single loss. As for. the other notables in the tournament... . The University of North Carolina, a third seed in the west and the defending national champion, has my nod for an upset against second ranked Located: Walking Distance of Erie's Downtown Medical Centers Erie Civic Center Erie Baseball Stadium Thursday, March 23, 1995 Stanford. The defense will have to be in full force for this to happen, however, because the Cardinal have won each game in the tournament by at least 20 points. But don't have fear, 'Heel fans, Carolina's got Charlotte Smith, the woman who can control the glass and slam given the open court. As for Texas Tech in the mideast- watch out Tennessee. With an easy win over Washington, Tech will give the Volunteers a run for their worth for consideration into the Final Four. And at 30-3, their consideration can't be overlooked. As for Georgia, this third seeded team can easily beat N.C. State for entrance into the Elite Eight, and give Colorado a game for much of the first half, but then lose it in the second half. We can't forget about Purdue! The Boilermakers have had their way in the tournament thus far, and can move into the Elite Eight with a victory against Vanderbilt. Impossible, you say? Well, I thought it was impossible for the Purdue men to lose to Memphis or to even lose before the Final Four, so I'll take this long shot, too. The Final Four in the men's tournament is the hardest American ticket to get a hold of. It's March Madness time, and this year's women's tournament cannot be overlooked. LIM
