Thursday, October 20,1994 Engineering faculty publish works by Erlcha Hagenbuch Collegian Staff Dr. David Foresman published "Teaching Users of Differing CAD Backgrounds the Basics of Pro Engineer." He presented the paper in June in San Jose, CA at the fifth Annual Pro-User Group Conference. This paper concerns engineer learning versus student learning (differences and similarities in learning styles). Dr. Amir Khalilollahi published "Opposing Mixed Concection Near Discreetly Heated Boards." He presented the paper at the annual European Joint Conference on Engineering Systems Design and Analysis in London, England in July. This work is Tauber teaches the art of discipline by Jerry M. Bruno Collegian Staff Dr. Robert Tauber, professor of education, spoke on the topic of discipline in the most recent edition of the College’s Provost’s Speaker Series yesterday. “Discipline at Home, School, and Work: Get Off the Fence and Take a Stand!” was the title of his lecture. Tauber gave a very inspirational and colorful lecture. Tauber has published books on classroom management for teachers. He has also received the Harambe dinner by Jerry M. Bruno Collegian Staff The Harambe dinner, an event that brings many cultures together, was held Tuesday night in the Wintergreen Cafe. “I wanted to welcome new students, of all colors, from the entire campus,” said Ngozi Mboto, minority student and special programs counselor. The theme of the dinner was “Let’s get together and feel alright” Mboto had only minimal time to organize the dinner. “I started working one month ago and was told weeks later about the dinner. I really had no prior knowledge of what the dinner was about.” “I have received so much support from the office and the students that it was more than a welcome dinner for the students, it was a welcome for me because I had no way of knowing how the Behrend system works with organizing things. Everyone was so wonderful.” Nicole Buther, a third semester political Science major enjoyed the dinner. "A lot of work was put into the program and it about heated boards, which are found in electronic chips, and how they must be cooled properly (during use) to promote efficiency. Modeling heated electronic boards can have applications in electronic equipment packaging and design. Dr. Ralph Ford published "Non-Linear Models for Representation, Compression, and Visualization of Fluid Low Images and Velocimetry Data." The paper was presented at the Institute of Electronical and Electronics Engineering (lEEE) workshop on visualization and machine vision in June. The paper is about velocimetry, a study that measures the velocity of fluids using imaging techniques (utilizing silicon graphics computers). Penn State-Behrend Council of Fellows Faculty Research Award twice. Tauber holds an M.S. in counseling and guidance from West Virginia University, and a Ph.D. from Penn State. Tauber gave the facts on Control versus Influence by B.F. Skinner and Carl Rodgers respectively. "Parents, teachers and bosses use the control method. They want to control individuals rather than influence them," Tauber said. "If there is a crack in the showed. We almost didn’t have it, but it all came together.” Kanova Johnson liked the dinner also, “It was more cultural than in the past and I hope it continues to be better in the coming yean.” Thomas Keefe, Student Programming Council President, said, "The Harambe dinner is a excellent opportunity to celebrate diversity and a great learning expenflßOCii The dinner was catered by Dobbins staff and was coordinated by A 1 Vogan, assistant manager of Housing and Food Service. “The rood was delicious and better than expected,” Mboto said. Conchita Dixon, a third semester accounting major, liked the food also. "I loved the cuisine and it was a definite improvement from last year. The speaker and choir were inspirational.” 'The Shiloh Baptist Church Young Adult Choir sang for the guests, and Charles Faulkerson, an engineer from General Electric, spoke on the theme of the dinner and the differences in the times from when he was younger compared to now. News Dr. Thomas Hemminger published "Detection and Classification of Underwater Acoustic Transients Using Neutral Networks", in September. "Using A Hopfield Network for Rotation and Scale Independent Pattern Recognition" was presented in Orlando, FL and was published in the lEEE Conference proceedings in July. Professor David Lokcr and Dr. Keith Hagenbuch published "Ultrasonic Instrumentation Systems." Their paper was presented and then published in the lASTED International Conference. This work discusses the development of an electronic system for use with an ultrasonic periodontal probe. Dr. Kenneth Fisher published "Design of an Improved sidewalk, and nobody pays any attention to it, eventually there could be a flower growing there. People will wonder where it came from and how it grew without assistance; there was nobody watering it and there was no sunlight on it. This is how people treat others; they want to get control of the lives." Tauber believes that parents, teachers and managers use a "smorgasbord" approach when disciplining in the home, classroom and workplace. "Combining contrasting Police and Safety Report October 17: An investigation into an incident in the residence halls found an underage student who had been drinking. October 18: A student reported having two compact discs taken from his room. Both CDs were returned. October 18: Someone took a clothes basket from the laundry room in Tigress Hall. October 19: Someone shattered a window in the stairtower. Quayle stands firm CONTD. PROM PAGE 1 that Boris Yeltsin couldn’t do the same in his part of the world. Quayle said that the United Stales set a dangerous precedent He summarized the situation saying, “Short term it will be euphoric. Long term we will regret doing what we are doing. We need to make the best of a bad situation. Aristide will prove to be an embarrassment to Counterbalance Mechanism for a Surgical Lighting Fixture.” The paper was published and will subsequently be presented in Nov. at the International Congress and Exposition in Chicago. The paper concerns creating a more flexible and accommodating surgical lighting fixture. Dr. Faisal Fadul and Dr. Ronald Krahe published "A DSP-Based Power Integrated Circuit Controller/Driver Board for Stepper Motors." This paper relays research concluding that this digital signal processor (used extensively in industry) creates a more efficient system by reducing cost and power consumption and by improving reliability. discipline strategies sends mixed messages to the person being disciplined. Quayle made a plea to the students to register to vote and take part in elections. He said, “Participate. We have to have good people to participate in our political system to improve it, and if you don’t participate, don’t complain.” He said that only 40% ol the American public wilt vote in the upcoming elections. The test will take place this evening from 8-9 p.m. in Perry lobby. Alpha Sigma Alpha member Iris Spinier said, "Police and Safety are giving two sobriety tests'io show how drunk people act The tests are supposed to prove a point" Members of the two organizations, have been chosen to have their faces painted white as a representation of alcohol related death*.
