According to Manager of Police and Safety Services Bill Donahue, This is not a new problem. Apparently it is a long-standing problem that all campuses most deal with.” Bnt with two break-ins and a multitude of car vandalisms inchrding smashed windows, the Safety under break-ins problem is not being dealt with well, in some students'eyes. Student Annette Bird said, "The car vandalisms hero at Behrend happen way 100 often.” Student Dan Moroy said, "With the price of a parking tag at $5O a semester, the least we could expect for our money is security far our can.” Donahue feels that adequate security is being given. ERIE -Former Vice President Dan Quayle will “stand firm” in a lecture at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, tonight. “Standing Firm,” also the title of his latest horde, is the theme for Quayle’s lecture, which will beghi at 8 pjn. hi Erie Hall. He will speak as part of Penn State- Behrend’s 1994-95 Speaker Series, “The American Agenda,” sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs and funded in part by the John Nesbit Rees and Sarah Henne Rees Charitable Foundation. The lecture will also air live on AM 1450 WPSE under sponsorship of First National Bank of Pennsylvania. Penn State-Behrend students, faculty, and staff who present Penn State-Behrend LD. at the door will be admitted free of charge. Ten minutes before the lecture, tickets to any unclaimed seats will be sold on a first come, first served basis. Safety is taking additional steps to stop this problem. The answer, officers feel, is in increasing and varying patrols in the parking lots. With increased patrols they hope to make their presence felt and scare off would-be vandals. By varying patrols, they hope to encounter a crime in progress. Students can help prevent break-ins by securing their cars' windows and doors. There are SO tickets for the community that have been set aside are available as soon as the doors open at 6:30. The proceeds from these $3 tickets will go to WPSE. The lecture is being shown via closed-circuit television in the Reed Lecture Hall and the Wintergreen Cafe. Quayle is currently chairman of the Competitiveness Center of the Hudson Institute, a non partisan educational institute founded in 1993 to help America meet the challenge of global competition. Quayle’s public service career began in 1971 as an investigator for the Consumer Protection Division of the Indiana Attorney General's Office. Later that year he became an administrative assistant to Governor Edgar Whitcomb. The Health and Wellness Center received a grant from the Erie Department of Education in order to fund die event According to Coordinator of Health and Wellness Services, Patty McMahon, the week's events are designed to "celebrate responsibility." McMahon said, the program "shows responsibilty not only for alcohol use and abuse, but for everything. It shows we care more about each other." The celebration is to be a joint effort among Edinbaro, Gannon and MercyhursL "It's more effective to do rogramming together to make change," said McMahon. director of the Inheritance Tax Division of the Indiana Department of Revenue. In 1976, Quayle was elected to Congress from Indiana’s Fourth Congressional District, defeating an eight-term incumbent Democrat. He was reelected to the seat in 1978. In 1980, at age 33, Quayle became the youngest U.S. Senator ever elected by the state of Indiana. He was reelected in 1986, and held office until being sworn in as vice president As Vice President of the United States, Quayle served as President of the U.S. Senate. He was also a statutory member of the National Security Council, the first chair of the National Space Council, and head of the Council of Competitiveness, a position he held throughout his term. The week's events include a caucus to be held at Gannon on Sunday, Oct 16. McMahon said, "In order to find out what the students want to do, we're starting small. The first student leadership caucus will be on Sunday from three to five p.m. Well talk about the issue at hand, serve a free dinner and then let the students continue discussing." A carnival will be held on Monday to raise money and to provide "something positive and something to have fun with." Alcohol awareness booths from the community will be set up and non-alcoholic beer samples distributed. The carnival has been a part of Behrend's Alcohol Awareness Week for the past four years.
