Thursday, March 24, 1994 The unheard of soundtrack... "So I Married an Axe Murderer" by Paul Lorio ColUgian Staff There was only one reason why I decided to purchase the "So I Married an Axe Murderer" soundtrack. That was because I heard that Toad the Wet Sprocket had a unreleased song on iL So after I bought the CD, I ran home and listened to the Toad song. Needless to say, I loved it, but after that I put the CD in my drawer and let it sit there. Last week I got bored so I decided to take out the CD and finally give it a good listening to. What I discovered was that I probably had one of the greatest collections of new music ever assembled. This release has a number of well established groups with an equal number of newcomers. Some of the established bands OUT ON A LIMB by GARY KOPERVAS [ fAcOEOUPS, \ l 12 oi? ) include Spin Doctors with ‘Two Princes,” Big Auto Dynamite II with their hit “Rush,” and Soul Asylum with a unreleased song called “The Break.” Toad the Wet Sprocket's contribution to the album is titled, “Brother” and I feel that this is one of the greatest songs that Toad has ever put together. It makes me even more excited about their upcoming new album due for release in mid- April. Ned’s Atomic Dustbin also has a remake of the old classic, “Saturday Night,” that proves that any song can be made great with the right band performing it. Some of the new bands to showcase themselves on this soundtrack are The Darling Buds with a remix of their hit, “Long Day in the Universe” and Suede with a beautiful song titled, “My II % 4 THE LOGAN WINTERGARDEN SERIES Insatiable One.” I feel that the best find on the album is a group called Sun-60. Their contribution to the soundtrack is called “Maybe Baby,” and is by far one of the better tracks on the release. It talks about heartbreak and coping in the 90s. The only negative portion of the release is the song by Chris Whitley which lacks substance and musical cohesion that the other groups seem to have. The poetry reading by Mike Myers does add some comic relief at first, but it wears thin after awhile. Beides that, this soundtrack for "So I Married An Axe Murderer” is a great collection of the songs of today. This soundtrack does for the real alternative movement what the “Singles” soundtrack did for the grunge movement d T&uev»sioM ■ W -m& COUCH FbTATO SLtf--- , g;> .
