Col. Pickering’s birthday celebrated The Col. Timothy Pickering Society Children of the Amer- ican Revolution, based in Dal- las, recently met at the Lu- zerne County Historical So- ciety Library to celebrate Pickering’s birthday. Pickering, who would have been 263 years old on July 17, is credited with organizing Luzerne County. He also served as Quartermaster Gen- eral and Secretary of State. Members and friends of the Colonel Timothy Pickering Society contributed to the restoration of the Pickering portrait last year through their “Pennies for Pickering” campaign. Society members, who meet throughout the year in the Back Mountain, range in age from 2 to 21 years of age. It is a peri- wi od of time when everyone reads. It instills good reading habits that are impor- tant. The school is striving to show students that reading is a rewarding activity, not just asso- ciated with school work. Stu- dents are encouraged to read nov- els, newspapers, magazines and anything other than a text book. Mini-cheerleading practice There will be mini-cheerlead- ing practice in the new gym be- ginning on Monday, Oct. 27, and continuing each Monday and Wednesday. Practice begins at 9:30.
