We believe the winning of wealth to be a perfectly legitimate pursuit. Wealth has great and beneficent uses, and the world would go very slowly if money could not be accumulated in wise and enterprising hands; but wealth may be used to make ail men near it prosperous and happy, or it may be used to make poor and miserable. When a rich man is only excited by his wealth with the desire to be richer, and goes 011 to exact larger profits and to grind the faces of the poor in order that he may be superfluously rich he becomes inhuman. The chistiau use of wealth is wli it we need in this couu try and in all countries. It is uot that wealth does not give in charity. It is not that wealth is not sufficiently taxed for the support of those who are wrecked in health or fortune, but it is that wealth does not share its chances with the poor, and point the pathway for the poor to ward prosperity. As a rule, wealth is only brotherly towards wealth, and the poor man feels himself cut off from the sympathy of all those who have the power of winning money. We may rest assured of one thing, namely; that the poor in future will insits 011 being recongnized. If they are not igored in mad greed for wealth at any cost to them—they will make the future a trou bled and terrible one for our children aud our children's children. If every youth, of either sex, was taught to swim, the sad list of drowning accidents which now forms a part of ev ery day's news in the smmer season would not entirely disappear, but it would be materially shortened; while the tempta tion to indulge in so healthful and invig orating an amusement would take so many more people into the water that its effects would be seen in a general improvement in health aud promulgation of life. Ev erybody should learn to swim because it is a delightful exercise, a wholesome hy genic practice alid an art which may be of the utmost use in saving the life of its possessor or of some person whom he or she may be in a position to rescue. This is a truth daily impressed by the record of accidents at this season and one which cannot be too often brought to the atten tion of a people who travel much by land and water and who generally frequent seaside resorts as do the Americans. Since the census was taken in June, 1880, very nearly a million immigrnuts have landed in the United States. In New York alone during the first six months of 1881, the arrivals numbered 210,000. They are nearly all bound for the West, and do not produce any appre ciable effect on the labor markets of the Atlantic coast. The new comers are of the self-supporting class, and 011 the vir gin land of the West will soon be produ cers of breadstufls for export to the Old World. New York's death rate for the last six months has been extraordinarily heavy, being twenty per cent greater than for the corresponding period of last year, when it was by no means light. It is safe to say that a part of the increase has been due to dirty and neglected streets, and a part also, perhaps, to the unusual weather conditions. These tell with greatest effect 011 people who do not lead home lives, aud who have few home com forts. There were three hundred and sixty jthree deaths in Cincinnati during the past iveek on account of the intense heat. The streets presented horrible scenes. In many cases the bodies lay where they fell, being guarded by a policeman unti the ambulance could come around and collect the corpses. Mr. Paruell, of West Point, Ga., the champion peach farmer, is the elder brother of the agitator, but was disin herited on account of infirm health. If not, go there and inspect them; then do thou likewise by decorating your transom and side lights around your front door, or a bath room win dow, or perhaps an office window, or in fact any glass in store, house or office that needs shading from the sun, and still receive the benefit of all the light. Many of our citizens are availing themselves of an inexpensive and handsome decoration, by using " Lum Smith's Imitation Stained Glass," for which we have the exclusive agency of Northern Pennsylvania,, and a great variety of paterns 011 hand testify to the fact that we can please any who may favor us with calls in that line.
