The chair of Mechanics and Ma- terials of Construction, made vacant by the resignation of Professor Chas. E. Paul, has been filled by the appointment of Professor P. B. Breneman, recently of Purdue Uni versity. Professor Breneman was born in Huntingdon county, Pennsylvania, and obtained his early education in Pennsylvania Schools. He was graduated from the Pennsylvania State College. receiving the degree of B. S. in 1894, and later the high er degree of C. E. He taught here, in the Department of Civil Engineer ing for several years, during which time a large part of his time was given to the teaching of applied mechanics. While here, he made an excellent reputation as a teacher. He left the College to enter practi cal engineering work and for several years he was connected with the following companies in tl e capacity of engineer in charge of construction and operation : The Davis Coal & Coke company, of Davis, W. Va.; The Franklin Iron Manufacturing company, of Clinton, N. Y.; The H. C.
