He said he would take ale, and came up, to the, counter between me and Steinley; the , first thing I heard was K.ane saying, "Yon Dutch ton:of a b—h, - you pirehed me," and with that ho struck him on the nose with his hand; I took hold of him •and pushed him into the . corner to peemit him from hurting the German; be got his hands down between his legs, and I heard something snap which I took to be a pistol; ho broke loose-and purled me over the stove, and • then went, at the German; it was a Imife that he had, and was abent to plunge it into the body of • ~the German, when Mr. Luckey and myself. sue seeded in taking the knife from him; Mr. Luck , e,y told - him that he might have murdered the man; he turned round and said, "Mr, Luckey, 1 thank you--I might . have murdered bim—yen saved probably from being hung." He pro ' ed to go home if Mr. Aikens would give him the knife; he got it and started away. The Ger man had got out of thrhouse the back way, and was itanding talking to me and my brother at the corner opposite the tavern: Kane came up on the southern side, and went into the tavern; •he then came -out to the door, and I saw him whetting his knife, 'and lie came - semis with it - open; the German was afraid and went round me; Kane followed , him round, mid made several -passes - at him with the knife, and when he was close on him and just' about to strike him, Kano was stnrek on, the ear with a stone; it did not knock 'him down, but he bled freely from it. BVCITANAN: Dear Sir—At a meeting of the "Eclectic Medical College of Al legheny county," it was unanimously voted that you be earnestly solicited to visit Pittsburgh as early as practicable, to deliver before this Asso ciation and the public one or mere lectures on the great truths and principles of tho American Eclectic Practice of Medicine. . J. Baowsr, M.D., of Allegheny City, L. Ocuenca, Sec'y. l'resident. CINCINNATI, Juno 0, 1851. Gentlemen --The invitation so cordially ten dered by the "Eclectic Medical Society of Alle gheny county" has been duly received. I would say in reply, that it will give me pleasure to . comply with the invitation as early as possible— . but in the present condition of my family and business engagements, I presume that tho 20th or 25th of June will be as early as I could pos sibly arrive in your City. Very respectfully, ,your obt. Jos. R. BCCLIANAN. To Drs. J. Brown and L. Oldshue. Prof. Buchanan is Dian of the Faculty at the Eclectic Medical Institute, Cincinnati. TMIIID WARD &root. llonsc.—The new school edifice of the Third Ward is to be erected on the corner-of Seventh and Grant streets. The foun dation is now being laid, and we presume the brick-work of the building will be completed in the course of the summer. Pittsburgh can now boast of having some of the finest Public School Houses to be found in the Upion. and the one about to be erected in the Third Ward will certainly add to her reputation in this respect. DZir We learn that all the dry goods stores on Market street, with the exception of two, closed their doors yesterday evening, at 7 o'clock. We are really glad to bear this,' and we hope the measure will be unanimously adopted, and be come a permanent regulation. The will afford the clerks an opportunity to improve themselves mentally and physically. Pas.= Btninntos.—We learn that the Police Committee have erected frame buildings in the 6th and Bth wards, on the engine lots, to be used as " lock ups." This is done in direct violation of the city ordinances prohibiting the erection of frame buildings. We presume a prosecution will grow out of it. Cr z. BAS6t.—The water in the basin is et ceedingly, fdthy, and it is to be noped that the Sinitary Committes of Councils will see that the street commissioners attend to having it drawn off regularly. If this is neglected those living in the neighborhood will be subject not only to' annoyance, but to sickness and death. 11118. ddIATAY.—Wo jearn that this lady (wife of Robert Galway, merchant, Liberty street) came to her death by falling thraugh the stair way of her house, by which her neck Was dislo cate& • Grant street, - in the neighborhood of the canal, is completely blocked up with pig metal, blooms, &c., to the great annoyance of all who do business at the canal. It is certainly some body's business to keep the pavements and streets clear of obstructions. airlL Miner & Co., Smithfield street, have just received- a. new novel entitled 4, The Roue, or the Hazards of Women," a domestic romance, which was published in London 24 years ago, and generally attributed to and said to' be writ ten by Sir Edward Lytton Bulwer. F/11.E.-41ie alarm of tire yesterday was caus ed by the reof of Henderson's drug store, on Liberty street, being in a blaze. The engines were promptly on the ground, and more damage ensued from the water than the fire. Dramss.—We are requested to state that Dr. HartleY was unexpectedly recalled to Philadel phia, in connection with his important duties as Aurist. He will, however, shortly return, of which his patients will be duly advised. F/111IT.-A fight occurred yesterday even ing, on the corner of Bedford and Gum streets, between a colored man and a white man, in -which the latter dr4 i vr a knife and inflicted a se vere gash in the a of the former, and then sloped. Dizzurass.—An old gentleman passing up Fifth street, yesterday, was suddenly seized with a dizziness in the head, and reeled and fell in the gutter. He received assistance from some humane gentlemen who went to his aid. ser We observe that the workmen are giving the old basin a thorough clearising, which will ac count for the muddy water being in our hy drants. ,116,6 The Bono; or, the Hazards of Women, a Domestic Romance by Sir E. L. Bnhver, has bin received and is for sale by W. Z. Wall, Fourth street. THE Run CASE.—The Jury in the Buck Beer Riot case returned a verdict, yesterday morning, of Guilty, as to Joseph Biddle, and Not Guilty; Aui to the rest. MO' Thos. L. On Monday last we had our usual accounts from America, and though the receipts still continuo to show a conside rable weekly berease yet oa that day the business amounted to ,0 bales, at an advance of one eighth of a penny per ib. on low scale of previous trans actions. Following this up, there has been each day a fair amount of business done, the trade, speculators, and exporters, taking a share. Cotton is freely altered, but we close with a steady business doing at last week's rates. The rale yesterday had the effect of reducing the common qualities of Sea friends about one-half of a pen ny per lb. on previous rates, while anything of a good nips folly maintained their ground.
