THE JUDICIAL CONVENTION. It is pleasing to look upon such meetings as that at Reading on the 4th ; and the Judicial Convention at Harrisburg, on the 11th. Such convocations form an . era in the history of party ; and the present ono may be referred to in all future time, as an era of the most perfect harmony that has ever dawned upon the Demo cratic party. True, there were minor differen ces of opinion, in relation bothlo measures and to men ; but the spirit that operated upon all was that of conciliation and compromise ; and all merely individual opinions and preferences were freely laid upon the altar of the publio good. 'Under such circumstances it is not to be wondered at, that the organs of the Democraby throughout the State are raising the notes of exultation, and rejoicing at the prospect before us. We would say that while there is all the ground for rejoicingthat we can at present rea sonably desire, it becomes us to be no less watch fhl and wary. Let us be prepared to meet our opponenti at every point from which they may seek to assail us; and bo especially on ourguard against the machinations of professed friends, whose efforts are all directed to the advancement of our opponents' cause. The Pennsylvanian, ever among the foremost in sustaining the true Democracy, says, speak ing of the Judicial Couvention:—"That body has well and nobly performed its duty, and pre- seated to their constitutents a ticket that will command thetespeet and secure the votes of all those who are sincerely desirous of the suc cess of the Democrazy of the State and of the Nalicet." . The Eecnin• g Arsras, a staunch supporter of the radical Democracy, says that "these nomi nations are such as will command universal res pect and admiration, and ore calculated to elicit the same hearty and enthusiastic approbation which has already been accorded to the nomina tions of the Reading Convention." And the Harrisburg Union tells its readers that "these nominations were effected with sin gular unanimity, which is the best evidence of the prominence and ability of our candidates." These are but a few among scores of similar expressions on the part of our political friends. Steamship "City of Pittsburgh." A splendid steamship, of 2200 tons burthen, was yesterday launched in Philadelphia, bearing the name of our City. She is the second of a line of four, intended to run directly between Philadelphia and Liverpool ; and is pronounced, by competent judges, to be a model of naval ar chitecture. The " City of Glasgow" was the first of this line, and the voyages that she has made have gone far beyond the expectations of her owners,—both in her speed and in the profit resulting from her trips. The "City of Pitts burgh," it la.confidently predicted, will prove an honor to the city whose name she bears, and in every way creditable to all who have been con cerned in her construction. . Since hearing of the safe transit of this noble ship into her destined element, we have thought of many ways in which the' citizens of Pitts burgh, and the Ladies especially, may testify their approval of the name given to her, as well as offer to both continents a specimen of that taste for which they are proverbial. But the manner, we think, in which the approval of the ladies can be most eloquently given, is in the presentation of a complete set of Flags for the " City of Pittsburgh." In this way, their own fair names will be conveyed to the great seaports of England; and not a breeze can blow that will not waft those names fur upon the sea, or gently sing of them among the lovely things of Philadelphia or of Liverpool. Let the Ladies only , commence the movement in this matter; and it will be but a few days ere gay Flags for the "City of Pittsburgh" will prove to. their eastern neighbors that clouds of dark smoke and soot cannot obscure the percep tion of the bright and beautiful, in the minds of the wives and daughters of the "Smoky City," any more than the constant din of hammers, and the interminable rumbling of wheels, can affect their capacity for appreciating the harmonious and the sublime. The Cabinet Makers of Pittsburgh might also Show their disposition to encourage the groat enterprise that has guided to the completion of these ships; and any present of this kind will be a standing memorial of the public spirit of the donor—and may lead to orders in his busi ness, from quarters where patronage might never, otherwise, have been looked for. We were no little astonished in taking a walk yesterday through the Fifth Ward to find the workmen engaged in laying tie Bails on the track of the Pennsylvania Railroad, eommenoing at the Comikl- Bridge - on LihertY street, running eMitwaril..*-In some places the street has been rail - sed nearly two feet abo;?e the former eleva tion, which of course will somewhat injure the adjacent property.- A double track has been put down, which barely leaves room for drays and other vehicles to pass on either side next 'the curb - genes. Between the tracks heavy oak plank are being placed, so as to make the sur face of the street more evenly, if any thing, than formerly. A car is used on the track already laid in carrying rails from the Canal Basin along the line of the road. The rails are of the T pattern, and ere very heavy, weighing about 600 pounds each. They wore manufactured, we be lieve, at the Montour Works, at Danville, Pa. It is proper to add that the work on the Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad, on the other side of the Allegheny, is progressing with great rapid ity. The rails are laid for several miles below Allegheny City, and there is every prospect that tho cars will be running to Beaver in tho month of July! Ilusru! !mutt!! One of the most pleasing demonstrations of the power of reason in domestic animals, under trying circumstances, it was our good fortune to witnesa a day or two ago. [We say reaaon, in this instance, because of tho undoubted evidence presented, of the capaeity.to adapt means to ends.] A young cat, (only about six mouths old,) accidentally fell into a well about 2f feet deep, where she must have soon died from the noxious atmosphere, if aid had not been extended to her. There was a piece of a board resting against ono side of the well, upon which, after it considerable struggle, she succeeded In seating herself. As soon as her position was ascertained, n small basket was let down by a rope, into which the cat tried to got hut could not. The rope was then let down with only a piece of cloth fastened to the end of it, into which it was thought l'nss might fasten her claws and hold on until alio reached the top of the well. This she two or three times tried to do ; but her efforts were un. intecessinl. Filially, she seized the rope, above where the cloth was fastened, in her mouth, and in this manner she was drawn in safety to the top—a distance of not less than twenty rept. We doubt whether a more interesting fact of this class has been presented to the naturallift for many years. Some barbarian who wishes to make it appear that the ladies, in the proposed change of dress, arc only trying to slide into the pants, or in other words to "wear the breeches,"— has quoted, with great exultation, the 6th verso of the 22d chapter of Deuteronomy,—whielt reads thus ;—"Tho woman [Shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment; for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God."
