6 STljc ffiimcs, .New Dtoqmfidto Jq. JTwesdai, October 22, 1872. FARM AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS We fnnffe communtcaUontfrom all persons wioare n(errirf n molten property belonging to tliit Colds, And how to Treat Them. , When you are attacked again with a hard cold treat it as follows: Eat no sup per. On going to bed drink two tumblers Of cold water. On rising in the morning drink freely of cold water. For breakfast eat a piece of dry bread as large as your band. Go out freely during the morning. For dinner eat about the same as you ate at breakfast. During the afternoon take a sharp walk, or engage in some active ex ercise which shall produce a little peiBpi ra tion. Go without your supper and retire early, drinking, before you jump Into bed, as much cold water as you can swallow. The next morning you are nearly well. If, instead, you feed- the cold, it will stay a week or ten days, and wind up with a hard cough, and expectoration. A cold is not, s many think, the result alone of exposure o a sudden change in the atmosphere. It as the product of two factors; one is a cer tain condition of the without. The only oil iii which this plant can grow, is a cer tain condition of the system, the prominent feature of which is a deranged stomach. Those who have good digestion very rarely have colds. So, to prevent colds, you must keep your stomach in a good condition ; in .ther wqrds you must keep yourself in Julgh health. There are some habits which give a general tendency to ' colds. For ex ample, the use of hut drinks, which in ad dition to flooding and weakening the stom ach, open the skin, and increase thereby sensibility to the influence of external .changes ; the use of warm baths, especially warm foot baths ; sleeping in close un ventilated rooms ; wearing the same llan mels during the night that have boen worn (during the day; using fat meats and pastry jhejshr deranging the stomach and liver . Pr. Dio Lewis The Application of Bone Dust. Why is it needful that bone dust should, in somo form or other, be added to our soil,, in order to keep it up to its full work in producing crops? The obvious answer is, that we must replace what we have remov ed in the crops, or animals pastured on the products of that soil. That much is carried entirely off the farm may be thus shown: Every -cow whose milk is sent off thojfarm, should give about two thousandiive hundred quarts of milk which will contain about sixteen pounds' of phosphate, which is equivalent to thirty pounds of bone dust. Each will produce a calf, which going off the farm, will take with it twenty pounds of bone. From this we see that, independent of the loss from the imperfect preservation of the manure and urine we take from the land at least fifty pounds of bone material to each cow, which in some form or other must be replaced, or the land will lose some of its fertility. It is this fact which has given rise to the idea that a milk dairy is very hard on the land. Such Is, undoubtedly the case. It is more exhausting than a butter dairy, whore the milk all remains on the farm, and only the butter is re moved to the city. There are other forms in which this loss may be replaced, except the direct ap plication of bone dust, but that an equiva lent must be given for all that is actually removed, no one will deny for a moment. Destroying Stumps. A little excavation is made under the stumps, between two of the large roots, some combustible material put in and then set on fire. Previous to this, however some dry materials should be piled around the roots, above the surface of the ground, and covered over with a campact layer of turf, forming a sort of coal pit. It has been found upon experiment that the stumps will burn in this way a number of days, with a subterranean fire ; and when the turf falls in, nearly all of the roots are found consumed below and above the surface of the ground. The hole left by the consumed stump will be , fuuud to contain a quantity of ashes, charred wood, burnt earth, tc, all val uable fertilizers a part of which may be thrown out for use elsewhere. C2TA Correspondent of the liural New Yorker says that last year on a piece of ground 19 by 20 feet, he raised ten bushels of onions from black teed. lie raised on ions on the same piece of ground the pre vious year, aud they did not pay for the seed, they were destroyed by maggots and wire worms. He procured three bushels of alt and two barrels of tlsh and pork brine aud top-dressed his garden (about one- fourth of an acre) with (t, after he had gathered all his vegetables. Last spring he ploughed the garden aud put on three ox cart loads of well rotted hog aud chip manure, aud such vegetables be never rais ed before.
