LAKCASTliR INTBaiLIGENCERIDAiLjIIL3L 20ifcfc3. fj -r.cit v.-. ey-iij - H ft' Incastrr JntelUgenctr. FRIDAY FVENINO. JTJIjY 20, 1888, Poultry en Large Scmle. The foUewine sound advice is given in the Poultry Monthly : " Then are many persons of moderate -means who have bad perhaps acres little experience with breeding poultry, and who get te wondering if it will pay te breed poultry en a large scale whether it will pay te 'embark in the breeding of poultry for market purposes as a business, and if it is geed policy te give up a fair paying clerkship, or small business, te engage in it, Ipuch questions are very difficult te determine te the satisfaction of all persons concerned, for much mere really depends en : the person than en the business in nearly. every department of human indus try,' and where one person may make a access of any undertaking another one may fail, though having started with equally as geed chanees of suceess. Poul try, te be successful en a large scale, must be kept in small colonies of about fifty birds eaeb, for many mere than that num ber in'a single house is apt te cause sick ness and disease, ere long, among them. Small flecks like that can be given mere attention than larger ones, and the first approach of disorder can be seen readily and promptly checked, while there is less danger of great less when thus kept in small flecks, as the treubla can usually be confined te the flesk in which it is started, by proper and orempt sanitary measures. " When the breeder is net tee far away from large retail markets, and especially where the breeder can market them him self, thus Baving commission, freight and less, it pays best te breed and keep poul try for the eggs they produce, as eggs known te be strictly fresh are always in geed demand at quite an increase in price ever that received for the ordinary 'store' eggs. Such breeds as the White and Brown Leghorns, and birds from them, either pure bred, cress-bred or grade, as a basis, are first class egg producers ; while a game cock is also valuable te breed te geed common hens, producing as a rule, . vigorous, active pullets, which are invari- bly geed layers. These who wish te raise poultry principally for the flesh, should raise the Light Bramas, Plymouth Reek, Dark Brahmas, or some of the Cechin breeds the first two named, however, being general favorites in this respect and also combining geed laying qualities under favorable circumstances. TheBe who can net or will net give the poultry regular or constant attentieu. shelter them properly, supply proper feed in liberal quantities and at frequent and tegular intervals, and pay a striet attention te cleanliness and thoroughness iu all the details of the man agement, need net expect even te succeed, net even te consider the question of less or profits, for success and profit here means work, work, work !" MotmeBlim In Utab. Geimantewn Telegraph. The bill whieh was enacted by Cengrefis, and was introduced by Senater Edmunds, of Vermont, into a law for the reorganiza tion of the territory of Utah and for the suppression et polygamy, has proved te be as complete a failure in practical operation as could have been desired 'by the most thorough-going Mermen. Ner is it easy te see at this time hew the" case could have been otherwise, for the Mormons outnumber the people of all ether faiths in that territory by a majority ranging from five te ene te teu te one. A recent item of news undertakes te explain tbe remarkable strength of Mormonism in Utah, by referouce te the extraordinary proportion of ecclesiastics in that territory all directly interested in maintaining dis cipline in the church aud te the oath bound stringency of membership, and be en. It is net necessary te go into details en this subject. The whole case against the Mormons may be summed up in a very few words. Their organization is a relig ious depetism, mere rigid, unbending, severe and tyrannous in its operations than any ether that had been known in modern times. It is, in fact, a problem that appears te be mere difficult of selu tien than that et slavery has ever been. It has,iu some respeets, justified its existence by its success in planting a self-sustaininsr civilized state in a region that had been previously the most forbidding looking desert between the Mississippi and the Pacific. It has invariably preserved peace with the Indians in that territory. It has organized a oemmunity that appears te be industrious, temperate, religious, orderly, obedient and law abiding, except in regard te polygamy. It furnished a regiment for the armies of the republic, which rendered geed service in the Mexican war. It built its section of the first great through liue of railroad connecting our own city with San Francisce. When the late Cel. Themas A. Scott was vainly striving te push the Texas Pacific railroad through te the western ocean, he made an agreement with the late lirigham Yeung te go te Arizona with a colony of Mormons, estab lish them en that portion of the Seuth Pacific route, and take a contract ter Tinildintr tfm linA Ttnfr. t.tin mnvaniAnf; proved a failure and was abandoned. In like manner, some national politicians tried te use the Mormons as an element sufficiently powerful te antagonize and counteract the influence of the old Mexi can organization in the territory of New Mexico, but that also failed ; and these two failures seem te show that while the Mermen organization is able enough te defend itself in Utah, it has lest its ag gressive power elsewhere.
