'TIS A FAIB TOWN TO BE UUCP A Uriel of Its Hlntery llrciruble for KeM- dence and lSueieeaa The OM FuN- Hc Works 1 be Growth oftbe Town. Every town and city. of any considerable age has mere or less of the historic con nected with it, and Columbia, one of the old towns of the state, can beast of its share. Settled in 1720 by the "WriRhts and Bethels, it was first a ferry, and bj natural growth assumed its present fair proportions, having been incorporated a borough in 1814. The war of 1812 gave it the first great impetus. Everything was high in price, and as Columbia became a Bert of supply depot for the armies of the young republic money was, of course, plentiful. Buildings went up rapidly, and the population increased for awhile, and then the reaction, which sooner or later fellows a prolonged war, came. Many of the most prominent men of the once flour ishing borough became bankrupt, and the business depression continued until 1833, when the commencement of the construc tion of what were then and are still known as the "public works" began. The town again flourished and building opera tiens were renewed. "With occasional in terruptions te its general prosperity the advancement of the town has been bteady until new a lovely town of nine thousand inhabitants leeks smilingly down upon the beautiful aud placid Susquehanna river from the hillb and slopes upon which it is bi'ilt. It may tiuly be baid that it lies " embosomed in the hills," for it is surrounded by them en all bides, except ing towards the south, where rolls the river. Wide and clean streets and every requirement demanded for a pleasant place of residence make it such, while itb really unsurpassed facilities for tianspor tiansper tianspor tatieu by lail and canal make it a most desirable place for manufactures. IlMttes and I5eund. The borough, as eiiginally laid out, was an irregular btiip of land extending from the beuthwest te the northeast, and of no very great size. Itb oiigmaterb would new be surprised could they sce hew their lines had been extended. Walnut street at ene time bade fair te be the principal business sheet of the town, besides Frent street, but eeit.un natural causes took the business te Locust btreet, and new there aie net eer half a dozen stores of any kind en Walnut stieet and but little business of a merchant ile character i3 done ou Frent street. Tlie I'ubllf Yierki". Columbia might be raid te have been the centre of the " public weiks " The canal system began here :.nd oxteeded te Pittsburgh, and thoiailread only extended between this place and Philadelphia. These were the days of ' section-beats." The canal beats were built in three or four sections, but in ether respects weie similar te the beats of the present day. A beat leaded with morchiudise and pro pre duco would be placed in sections en eais especially provided for the purpose at Phil adclphia, and would be bi ought in this manner te Columbia, licit they woule be put together, an iiiehr.y tiar leading into the water lv t! e eic "basin" facilitating the eperativ. fj u Columbia the beats were taken by rau.J te Pittsburgh. The Tidewater cam! at forded direct communication with Ivilii mere, with which place an important tiaJe existed. Immense warehouses suneunded the basin, and hcie huge quantities of valuable goods wcie constantly steicd. These were palmly days for Columbia, and her mci chants fattened ou the harvest. The construction of the piuseut section of the Pennsylvania lailread fjem Harris burg te Lancaster, by wa' of Middlctuwn and Mount Jey, (it was then owned ai d operated by a separate corporation, which afterwards leased the read te the Penn sylvania railroad company for 999 years) was a heavy blew te Columbia, as the great business between Philadelphia and the West had then another and bettei channel through which te flew. The sys tem of section beating seen became a thing of the past, and the great basin warehouses seen became empty. The place where they ence reaicd their heads is new occupied by coal yards and PeunT sylvania xailread tracks. Columbia had ether sources of business upon which te depend, however, and recoived no death blew from the less of ene great seurce of business, aud 'when the line of railroad between this place and Middletown was completed in lSCf it received an influx of trade again from its old seurce, the West. Kc.tI't r; Columbia K. 1C. In 1857 a movement was agitated here with a view of building a railroad between this place and Reading. It became popu lar immediately and that same year a bill in its favor was passed by the Legislature, mainly through the efforts of Cel. C. S. Kaufiman, who was then a member of the state Heuse of Representatives. After the usual difficulties which always acoera pany any great cntciprise had been sue cess fully surmounted, the read was finish ed, aud was first opened for business in 1SC3. Wm.6. Case was the first presi dent of the company, aud A. J. Kauffman its first secretary. Its passenger station was at that of the Pennsylvania railroad's, and tickets were bold for both reads by E. K. Boiee. Daniel Griffith managed the freight business, having his office in the building opposite the present Pennsylvania railroad depot, new a tobacco warehouse' Beth of these gentlemen are new dead. The first regular tiekt and freight agent of .the read was William Clark, the pres ent ticket agent, whose commission bears the date of November, 18G4, but he had filled the position several months before I receiving the commission. Mr. Clark came here from Strasbnrg, Pa., where he had been engaged in the mercantile business. He has been in tbe service of the read for a longer period than any person new con nected with it The first superintendent was Itobert Crane, who had also been the contractor for the read. The first ticket agent at Lancaster, after the opening of the Quarry ville branch, was his son, Geerge Crane, new a resident of Columbia, who walked from thin place te the scene of his new duties, with all of the paraphernalia of office slung en nis back. The present superintendent of the read, A. M. Wilsen, first entered its service in 1868 as a freight conduetor, and has eincc j risen through the successive stage3 te the very desirable position, a geed example of what perseverance, energy and faithful ness can accomplish. Although the read had its birth here it was deemed mere advisable te call it by its present name than by giving prece dence te Columbia, as Reading was a larger and mere wealthy place, and might, therefore carry inore influence te the minds of these whose support it was Jo Je s' rable te secure in the prosecution of the eatrpribP, if that name appeared first. Since it first benau operations, down te the time that it was leased te the Phila delphia & Reading railroad company, the read experienced all the vicissitudes inci dent te American railroads. The new headquarters of the read en Locust street, thk place, will bj one of the handsomest raihejd depots in the state, and the in creased accommodations it will afford will leatly inciease the read's business. 'J. lie (iruwili of iheTunn. Filteeu yeais age Columbia was juet built up beyond Fourth and Walnut streets, but new the quaiter beyond that is the handsomest in the town, and is still rapidly increasing in extent. Neither did Locust street extend se far neith as new, aud when Mr. Seeath built his present residence he was said te leside in the country ; new he lies in town, and ether houses stretch out beyond bib own. The tewu made a great stride ferwaid when the Pennsylvania lailread works wero located here, and its last forward meve ment has been caused by the erection of the Keely stove weiks. If, as new seems' appa'eiit, the Shawnee lolling mill is again put into operation, the next step forward is at hand, and a new eia of prosperity is opening te tiie town. Col umbia wa- ene of the fiist places in the state te introduce a water system, the cempiuy being organized iu 182I). The first reservoir occupied the present site of Coekmau's M. E. chapel, aud the water supply was bieuuht from springs in the surrounding hills through wooden pipes, aud disti, bufcu Ly similar fiail chiunels. The fiiaeas v.as introduced here in 1833. A 21. S.
