IN NEW XOKU. AND LANUASTISK. The Trade and oetlook In Sumatra, Seed Lent and Havana ler the Week Knalng Saturday, Hay 10, The Yeung Plants. U. S. Tobacco Journal. A solid revival of business was notice able iu in our market and once mere faces of leaf dealers were beaming with a leek of satisfaction. The lirst thing te put an air of lleurish en the market was the re port of sales of 1,100 cases of '82 Pennsyl vania te a manufacturing firm in this city. A report of this kind iu which the sellers as well as the buyers were- net shrouded in mystery, and in which parties were concerned of whose veracity there was no doubt, went further te establish the repu tation of the '82 Pennsylvania than all ether reports of sales that have been made every week with the regularity of clock work by debigninp parties during the past few months. Whatever the price may be that has been icalized, it stands te reaseu that the Rellers didn't come out without a pieiit. If inferences are iu place, the price ma;? be put dewu at 20 cents. Aueth'jr feature which helped te inspite the market was the eager inquiry for ex ex eort r.teck. Five hundred cases or '82 Wisconsin were taken at an average of 10 cents. There was also a lively inquiry for '82 Connecticut, and the tales reported aggregate about 450 cases, part of which were seconds, at 11 cents : wrappers sold at from 10 te 32 cents. A number of large city cigar manufacturers visited the market and entered into negotiations with holders of new tobaccos. Next week, very likely, we shall be enabled te record considerable sales. Old tobaccos were sought after by spec ulators only, but holders, believing the time at band when prices will advance generally, refused te take the low offers made. It is with reluctance that iu the midst of this prevailing spirit of hopefulness and great expectations we are compelled te drag out the spectre of Sumatra. Our latest reports from Amsterdam speak of heavy sales, reaching some 7,000 bales, designated for the market. Hew many mere speculators, residents of Amster dam, will threw into our market bofero July 1 is hard te tell. Certainly the num ber will net be a trifling one. At present our expert outlook is line, and if the mar ket can be relieved of its enormous surplus through this chaunel, holders of low guides of tobacco may once mero expect a paying business in the near future. At present low grade goods go beggiug in the market. The sales of the week were as fellows : Pennsylvania Crep '82 1,100 cases ; reported at 20 cents. Crep '81, 500 cases at 8 te 13 cents. Crep '80, 100 cases, at 0 cents. Wisconsin Crep '82, 500 cases at 10 cents, reweight for expert. Sumatra Market very active. Sales 400 bales. Out of town buyers invested quite heavily. Tlie market is gradually becoming bare of line goods which sell at figures ranging from $1.30 te $1.50. Light and ragged stock is yet te be found in considerable quantities at 90 cents te $1.05. Havana Market dull. Sales 1500 bales, 85 cents te $1.20. ' The l'blladelphia Market. Leaf. Seed leaf. Handling of cijrar leaf is new improved in every branch. The '81 crop of Pennsylvania is coming te the front, and daily receives new admirers, while Ceuucticut and Havana sued i mov ing off finely. Considerable '82 crop has bceu moved, especially Wisconsin and Connecticut, through packets' samples. Prices remain private. ' Sumatra soils in modcrale amounts at from $1.10 te $1.40. Havana shows incrcastfjl sales, but com petition is heavy, hence margin is small. Prices rauge at old quotations. Receipts for the week : 351 cases Cen uccticut, 211 cases Pennsylvania, 72 cabes Ohie, 150 cases Wisconsin, 49 cases Yerk state seed, DS bales Havana, 42 bales Su matra, 301 hhds Virginia aud Western leaf tobacco. Sales have beeu: 270 cases Connecticut, 291 cases Pennsylvania, 39 cases Ohie, 90 cases Wisceusin, 49 cases Yerk state seed, 80 bales Havana, 23 bales Sumatra, 87 bhda Virginia and Western leaf iu transit direct te manufacturers Expeitcd of leaf tobacco : Te Liver pool, 41,219 lbs ; te Mantanzas, 3,814 de; te IJarbadees, 1,719 de; total, 40,752 de. Uhus' Kcpert. Sales of sceil leaf tobacco reported by J. S. Gans' Sen & Ce., tobacco brokers, Ne. 131 Water street, New Yerk, for the week ending May 21, 1883 : 800 cases 18S2 Pennsylvania, p. I. ; 500 cases 1881 Pennsylvania 9()12 ; 100 cases 1880 Pennsylvania STajlUc. ; 300 cases 1882 Ohie Hav. need p. t ; 100 cases 1881 Ohie Little Dutch 17c ; 150 cases 1881 New England 13(g)30c. ; 300 cases 1881 Wiscensiu Havaua,8Jllu. Total 2,250 cases. Tlie Lecal Tobacco market. The market has been very quiet during the past, operators kcepiug their transac tions te themselves as closely as they can. Seme tbree or four hundred cases of packed leaf have changed, a small pro portion of it being of the crop of '80 and the larger portion being '81 aud '82. Thcre are rumors of some heavy purchases being made in adjeiuing counties, and " away up the river " by some Lancaster packers, but the figures cannot be had. One thing 6cems te be certaiu : the buyers of '82 leaf believe they have done well in buying. These of thorn who were early in the field and bought largely are yet en the hunt for mero, and these who cried down the crop early in the season are buying up the odd lets yec scattered throughout the county. The quality of the tobacco is pronounced geed, and though it has net yet passed its critical period of sweating no great fears are felt regarding the final outcome. The mere sanguine packers say " there's mil lions in it." Even the holders of old tobacco are mere cheerful than they have been. The Sumatra bugaboo has pretty well died out. Pennsylvania tobacco is regarded as the best grown in the nation, or anywhere else except in Cuba, and it possesses the rare quality of keeping well. Its like whisky the elder it gets the better it gets. Net much has as yet been done toward planting the crop of 1883. A few patches have been set out with plants grown under glass, but it will be a week or two before planting becomes general. Com plaints are still heard of the devastation committed by insects en young plan ts, some beds being totally ruined. Following are some late sales ei loose '82. They wi'l serve as showing the aver age price at which the remnant of the crop is being taken. Harry C. Moere has bought the follow ing lets : Charles Casey, of Bart, 0,000 pounds at 11, 4, 2 ; Jehn Jehnsen, of Bart, 1,000 pounds at 11, 4, 2 ; Martin Fritz, of Bart, 5,500 pounds at 11, 7, 4, 2 ; Jacob Rheadp, Buek, 3,000 pounds at 11, 4; 2; Jehn M. Retter, Leacock, 1,500 pounds at 8, 4; 2 ; E. Q. Ernst, Leaoeck, 1.500 pounds at 7$, 3, 2 ; Benjamin Keesay, Elizabeth town, 1,200 pounds at 10, 3. Samuel Moere bought the following among ether lets : Jehn- W. Thompson, Sadsbury, 2 acres at 15, C, 5, 2 ; Jeseph Large, l acre at 15, 10, 4, 'Z ; Jenn a. Wholen, Chester county, 2 acres at 13, 7, 3 ; Henry McCIennan, 2 acres at 14, 10, 5. Saved by Newfoundland Des. Jee Kupel, some distance out of Racine, saw the cyclone coming and started for the house of Mr. Bilker te get into a cellar, his wife and child being with him. When about hal way across the lets the storm caught them. Mrs. Eupei fell and lest her held en the child, which was carried rapidly toward the river. A large Newfoundland deg of Mr. Hilker ran and caught the child and held it nntil the dancer was ever, saving it from being carried into the water. Mr. Kupel grasped his wife and saved her. At North Point a man and a whole rig were lifted up in tllfe cyclone and dropped sorae fifteen feet away. Ne damage was done by the wind, but the wagon was in jured when it struck the -ground. When the storm struck the lake the water was thrown into the air te a height of seventy five feet all along the shere. A house situated en High strcet before the storm is missing and cannot be found. The house of Matt. Levan and wife, an aged ceuple residing en the lake shore, was picked up and hurled into tbe lake, leav ing them sitting at a table en the 'fleer uninjured. m m Advertising Cheats ! t !
