Dealers mount especially liue specimens of the skull, but the greater number have no ether value than that of the ivory they centaiu. The wages of the hunter depend, of nourfie. unen his coetl fertune in finding the game. One of the me.it expert of these gives as instances of successful hunts the items of three days' work which yielded thirty-nine dollars aud seventy live cente ; of six days with a yield of twenty dollars aud ten cents, and of eight days' hunting which netted forty dollars and twentv-tive cents. Without speaking of these enemies of the '"gator" who hunt him for sport, there are about two hundred men in the Btate of Flerida who make a business and trv te make a livinjr by capturing or kill ing him. Very many have eaten alligator steaks from simple curiosity te learn its flavor; but many mete eat it bocause it is thecheapest, aud, oftentimes, the only meat they can afford. The flavor when it is fried or broiled is that of beefsteak plentifully supplied with fish gravy, while the fore-legs roasted taste like a mixture of chicken and tish, and have a delicate flbre. Tery methodical in his habits is the alligator, and very suspicious of anything new around his home. When he starts out in search of feed it is invariably an hour after the tide has begun te ebb, and he returns about four hours after low water. If he has a land journey te per form, he gees and comes by the same rnnte. never deviation from it until he sees evidence th.it strangers have trespassed en his domain. He lives en the banks of some stream, for he has decided objections te stagnant water, aud te make his home he digs a hele at least twelve inches below the level of the water. This holt) is por per lectly straight, although en au incline, and from twenty te thirty feet in length, terminating iu a chamber sufficiently large te admit of his turning iu it. Theto he or she dwells alone, save when the female is eariug for a very young breed, in which case the one room is converted into a nursery. Full-grown alligators net only de net occupy the same hele, but they will net live near each ether. The alligator usually lays her eggs about the first of July, and during the mouth of June bhe is busily engaged iu preparing the cradle for her young. Selecting a place en the bauk of some stream or creek, she begins work by beating hard and level with her tail an earth platform about bix feet square. She scrapes together with her ferefeet, oftentimes from a distance of fifty yards from the proposed nest, dried grass, sticks auu niua uum uiteeu in twenty cubic feet of the material is iu a place ceuvcuieut for her purpose. On the day following the completion of these preparations she lays from thirty te fifty eirffs en the iH-enared ground, and piles ever them dried grass and mud deftly worked iu with sticks until a mound six feet in diameter aud three feet high has been raised. The suiface of this is quick ly hardened by the sun, and iu order that it may be as nearly air light as possible, the female visits it each day, covering with mud any crevices that may have ap peared, as well as remodeliug such por tions as de net satisfy herseuse of beauty. The erdiuary time of incubation is about two months, aud then the newly-hatched breed may be heard yelping and snarling for their mother te continue her work by releasing them from their prison uest. Uu the secend or third day after the first uoise has been heard, the fomale bites a hole iu the 6ide of the mound, out of which the vminrr ones, barelv mero than cloven inches long, eome tumbling in the most vigorous manner, crawling directly tow aid the water. Until the young are three years old the mother exercises a parental care ever them, always remaining within sound of their voices, net se much te pro tect them from their natural enemy, man, as lrem their unnatural enemy mcn father, who has an especial fondness ter his own children in the way of feed. When then the hunter finds a nest, he carries the eggs home te hatch them, where he can easily capture the breed if the eggs are fresh or it the young iu tuem are net mero than five inches long ; at any ether stage they will net hatch if removed and are of no value except for the shell. The captured eggs are then packed in straw as nearly as possible in the natural way, and the yeuug may be thus hatched out very successfully. One farmer reared sixteen hundred and another a thousand last season. The young will eat immedi ately after coming out of the shell, but they thrive best if given no feed for at least three months. The crv of a full-erewu 'gator is net unlike the bellowing of a bull,' except that it is of mere volume, since the voice of a male can, en a calm day, be heard a dis tance of five miles ; and they may be said te be sun-werahippera, since they seldom " resolve themselves into song," save at the rising of the sun ; in fact, the only exception te this morning melody is when a storm is approaching, une average Flerida " cracker " needs no ether ba rometer than the alligator .in the neigh boring creek or swamp. One ceases te be astonished at the volume of sound which comes from these monsters when he sees a full-grown one put forth all his strength te produce the effect, lie stretches nis oeay te its tun length, inhaling sufficient air te puff him up nearly twice ms natural size ; tuen, holding his breath, as it were for an in stant, he raises both head and tail until he forms the segment of a circle. When all is thus complete, the "rear" comes with sufficient force te startle one, even though he be prepared for it. Since, in order te guard his head, the alligator is obliged te tarn his body once closed he is unable te open them if only a moderate amount of strengtn en the part of man be used, the hunter selects this point for attack when it is possible for him te steal upon his game unawares. If the iutending captor gets a firm held' upon the jaws of his ganie in this way, the monster becomes reasonably easy prey ; ene rope seen secures his jaws, another is tied around his neck and fastened te atree, while a third secures his tail in the same way, thus stretching the captive in a straight line ; his fore paws are tied ever his back, a stout pole is lashed from the end of his tneut te the tip of his tail, and the 'gator is helpless. It is seldom, however, that the hunter gets his game at a disadvantage, and te secure him alive he must set about the work much as boys de when they suare rabbits. A tall, stout sapling rear the water's edge is the first reqti'site, and directly in front of that, in thu water, a uarrew lace or pen is mane witu biiiuBP, the two outer ones being notched, as is the spindle of a box-trap. At the end of this pen, and neater the shere, a stake is driven into the mud, and en the top of it is fastened a piece of tainted beef. A stout repe, at ene end of which is a large noeso, is fastened te the top of the sapling and te the upper part of the noose is at buhed a cress-bar. or trigger, which, when the tree is bent, catches iu the notches en the outer stakes just below the surface of the water, the noose hanging around the entire opening. Te get at the meat the alligator attempts te swim under the bar, but his back displaces the trig trig ger, and he is a captive, with the repe fastened just back of his fore legs. It is necessary te bind the captive while he is in the water, and then te carry him te the shere in a beat ; for, amphibious as he is, he can be drowned if dragged cveu a short distance tureugu tue wui. When once properly secured and en land, the alligator can de nothing in the hope of effecting a release, save te roll ever, :hh1 t.hi he docs bv a miehty effort with his shoulders, frequently working himself ever a quarter el a mtie in uisiauuu iu single night. . These who are most familiar with the habits of the alligator, as seen iu the Smitlmm states, believe his partiality for decayed feed docs net arise lrem auy par ticular flavor it may possess, out simpiy because in a putrid state any large amount of flesh is mere easily tern apart and mas ticated than when fresh. Although the possessor of se much ivory in the shape of teeth, and able te use its jaws with se much power, it is an extreme ly difficult matter for au alligator te dis member a pig, even after the flesh is de cayed. While the meat is yet firm and the muscles intact, it is an impossibility for him te de ether than swallow it nearly whole, as he semetimes does when he is interrupted shortly after he has killed his prey. That alligators de like fresh feed when it is possible for them te eat it is shown by the fact that fresh fish pd small turtles are their faverite diet. In the stomach of a 12 feet alligator there have been feuud six catfish, none of them mutilated, weiehing altogether M pounds. If one believes implicitly the positive assertion of the alligator hunters, he must perforce say no man knows the span of liln allotted these Saurians. The native Floridian, as well as the httuter, will insist that the largest of the 'gaters are mero than a hundred years old, peitfting te the fact of his slew growth in proof of the assertion. A newly-hatched alligator is eleven inches long ; at the age of six years he is very slim and but three feet in length; at ten years of age he has gained consider ably iu breadth and but twelve inches iu length, while during the next two years he has grown hardly moie than one inch longer. An alligator fifteen feet in length, caught near the mouth of the St. Jehn's river, was se covered with barnacles and ether marine growth as te make it almost certain that he must have been iu exist ence soventy-rfive years. A Heek That will Ceinmanit Attention. N. Y. Journal of Commerce, Harper & Brethers have iu press aud anneuuee for publication iu the spring a biography of James Buchanan, by Geerge Ticlcuer Curtis. That such a biography will be of the highest interest aud value it is net necessary te say. The true history of air. Buchanan's administration has up te the present time been a profound secret. Fer while au immense cieai uas oeen wru tn nhniifc it. no writer has had any decu mentary authority for his estimate of the motives, intentions and prevailing counsels of the president aud cabinet in the trying times which preceded the wa Frem the later history of such men r.s Jass, Dix, Stanten, Helt and ethors, it has been generally regarded as settled that Mr. Buchanan was alene responsible for the course of his administration. But the histerv of that administration hitherte published has been in large part conject ural and imaginary. It is of the highest important that that history should be known. The time has long passed when from political fcel- ing any ene could desire te Bupprcbs tue truth, aud new all men will bogladtetako a dispassionate view of the men and the events of twenty -three years age at Wash ington. Mr. Buchanan was in the habit of making brief and clear memoranda of daily conversations, interviews and occur eccur rtipps. He preserved all important cer respendence. The material for his biog raphy is thus ample and Ihe character of the book cannot but be of the most ab sorbing interest. Its revelations will un doubted! v surprise all who have accepted as true the supposed histories which have been written in the excitement of strong partizan feeling, and perhaps net the least startling portions will be in the letters of eminent men wne nave Deen creuueuwim dissent from the policy of an administra tion, which policy they in fact guided and approved. In any event the biography of James Buchanan covers the most imper tant period of our history since the revo lution, and knowing as we de, the mate rial which he left te be UBedat the proper time, we have no doubt that Mr. Curtis has made such use of it that the publication will threw clearer light en history than any or all of the books which have attempted te show hew the United States was led into the war in 1801.
