Leve came a beggar te her gain, Mere wisely than with pomp and state, i'er who hath woman's pity wen, May count love' alege and battle wen A Nlglit Kuq of Cattle. Cincinnati Commercial. Last fall a large herd of big stceis for market were bem J driven across the ceun try from Musselshell te Billings, en the Northern Pacific railroad, where they were te be shipped en the cars for Chicago. There were 2,000 head, I should judge, the prejierty of a Mr. De Hass, a very young man. One evening a military camp Lad been made just ahead of the cattle, and en the tame side en which the herd was being driven. A storm was coming up and the cattle exhibited some Bigns of. uueasicesa. Mr. De Hass sent word te the military offi cer that he had better get his men, wagons and animals en the opposite side of the creek and out of the way, as he feared there was going te be a "night run." The herders were instructed te keep their horses saddled and be ready te mount at a moment's notice. The cattle were very uneasy, getting up, lying down again and shifting about. At last, about mmniguc, there came a fcharp flash of lightning, followed by a heavy peal of thunder, ami in an instant the whole herd were upon their feet. "Mount and whip out !" cried De Hass, and the herder who was at the head of the column drove oft a few el the leading steers iu the direction they weie te go. AH the ethers followed, and the heard was seen in full flight. The holders made no effoitte check or control them further than te keep them going stiaight; they lode at the head of the column, one en each side of them swum: te the right or left te keep the tiail ; bluffs and precipices were avoided and the open flat gieund com led. The nin lasted about two hours, when a gorge was being ueared in which the cattle would crowd and break their limbs They were new juite tired, and the herd eis dctei mined te exert their autheiity aud step the run. The head of the column was bent out en the prairie, and circled leuud and round until the cattle became tied up in a lingo ball aud could net move at all. In this way they weie obliged te htaud until morning, the hcrdeis Tiding leuud aud leund tbein aud keeping them completely tied up. At daylight they were allowed te '"open out." First the outer edge fccatteied, then lajcr after layer until the huge pile of beef was a l.eid grazing as quietly as if nothing had hap pened. Our Reporter's Vacation 'tr-.
