The cook who went with James .Gorden Beanett en a yacht tear around the world tells a World reporter what doings there 'ware en the vessel : "Sometimes as many aa twenty gentlemen would sit down te table of an evening, and, while that same German band was a playing airs en the deck till it would make yen sick, they down in the cabin were eating and drink ing. Each day there would be a new bill of fare and as many as ten coursessome ceursessome coursesseme times mere, according te the occasion and the company. Before they get fairly down te the coffee they were a prettly lively set, cutting up all sorts of capers. Then they; 'would come up en deck and sing some mere. Mr. Bennett used te call all the men up en deck and have them dance the sailor's hornpipe. Then when they get through he had champagne served te them all around like a prince. All the time we were at Gibraltar I had a mighty hard 'time getting any sleep at all, what with the eoeking and the rest of it. Then Mr Bennett was all the time playing tricks like a student.. One night, very late, he went down into the held and filled a big pan full of some sort of burning stuff and set it en fire. There was a big flame and a great deal of smoke at once, and he was da lighted, and sent a boy rushing around the ship shouting 'Fire V Fire?' at the top of his voice like a madman. The guests down in the saloon and the sailors and all en beard came up en deck terribly fright ened and most of them only half dressed. Seme of them jumped overboard and ' beats had te be lowered te pick them up. They were very sheepish when Mr. Ben sett told them it was only a joke. He only wanted te get them up se that they might have some fun with him. Ne, I tell you most of these fel lows were pretty mad, but you see they didn't say a word because they were all his guests and didn't want te offend him. fie ordered up fizz and pelly, "and they sat there laughing and talking in their shirts and night gowns till morning. Anether time after a big dinner, about 1 o'clesk in the morning, Mr. Bennett came up en deck alone and, calling one of the men en watch, teld.hitn he wanted a hese. The man fetched it te him, net suspecting anything, and takieg the nozzle in his bands he stumbled down stairs, opened the state room doers, and, quicker than a flash, poured a big stream of cold water into all the beds where the men were sleeping:. That time they were hopping mad and did some tall swearing, but in the morning nothing mere was said about it." 1 A xratnerJess Country. A certain editor recently received a woodcut of Geerge Washington, and pinned it te the wall near the office deer. One day while at work his little gir came into his room, and spying the picture, started the following dialogue : " Who is that picture of, papa ? " . "Washington." " Who was Washington ?" " Father of his country." ' Why was he called the father of Ins country, papa? " " Because he fought for her independ ence, and was a great and geed man." "Is he alive new, papa '.' " " Ne." "When did he die?" " December 14, 1799." "Who is the father of this country new, papa ?" "Ne one ; it's fatherless." The little girl was silent a few moments and then inguircd : "Was he the little boy who couldn't tell a lie ?" "The same." "Well, tins country will never have another, will it, papi ?" And the conversation was concluded with the empcatic remark : " Net even a stepfather." m m An American Jeke in Paris. The feast was set, the gnests were met, when a young man entered in. Were it otherwise, I should have net ventured te call upon you upon this auspicious day, when, as I per ceive, you are about te celebrate the betrothal of your fair daughter. Still, as it may save you $10,000 but if you are engaged I will retire." "By no means, my dear sir, by no means," said the father of the bride ex pectanr, warmly ; " we are jutt about sitting down te dinner, but join us, and after dinner, we can discuss mattcis." The young man allows himself te be induced te join the jovial company, where he eats for two and drinks for three. At the conclusion et the feast the father escorts him' te a private apartment and begs him te reveal his business. "I think, sir," he says te the -strancer, offering him a cigar of prime quality, " that you observed that you could buew me hew te save $10,000." " Precisely," says the stranger, lighting the cigar.
