LANCASTER DAILY ESTE: I .iGiuNCER, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMJ5ER 29.1S82. ILanrastrt intelligencer. WEDNESDAY EVENING, NOV. 29,1882. The Legislative Becerd. Wiiko-tlmrro Union leader. The Union Leader is with thoso who duii't believe in doing away with the Leg islative Record. The Record has been a bin Ktcal and a big uuisanoe, bat it has presented not a few compensating julvan tatK, and there is no reason why, under such a reform administration as the peo ple expected when they oleotod Governor Pattison and a Democratic House of He lrescm 'ivci-f a should continue cither a steal in mi's nice. It is all ve: y well to say that the enter prise ol ih unem daily newspaper pro vides Guili.ii inly comprehensive reports of the proevtu f the Legislature for the general reader. -m it does. But we have found the flips of tho Legislative Record very useful oniaany occasions in looking up the records of bad members whom it was desirable not to return to Ilarrisburg and good ones who had faid or done tint which entitled ,tbem to the approval oi their constituents and re election. The Legislative Record should be con tinued. It should, however, bo a full and correct record of everything that is said and done during the sessions of that body. It should contain all that is said and only what is said. Members should not be permitted to revise their speeches except in so far as it is necessary to correct actual errors in the reports of the stenog raphers. They should not have the privi lege of making it appear in tho Record that they have said one thing, when they have said an entirely different thing. The largo city papers havo tho spaeo to publish quito lengthy reports of Legisla tive doings, but even they cannot give ail, aud as those who select what is given are from those cities, it frequently happens that they select what is of interest ouly in thoso cities and utterly neglect what is of absorbing interest throughout tho interior. . The contractor for tho publication of tho Record should be requited, as the con gressional printer is required, to publish at night the proceedings of the day and have them on the tables of the members at the opeuing of the session next morn ing. The tax payers can afford the legitimate cost of the publication of the Record, and at that cost and published under tho con ditions above outlined, it will be a good return to them for the money in vested. It cau bo mado, wo say, a good thing, aud there is little sense in proposing to do away with it, simply because it has been made to cover a steal and recklessly cared for during a period when almost every thing covered a steal and was recklessly cared for.
