One of the worst crowds of young boys in this city spend most of their time lounging en the front steps of the court house. They range in years from G te 10, and at almost any hour in the day they can be seen at this place. They are a great an noyance te every one, as they curse and swear, spit tobacco and smoke bad cigar " butts." Often ladies have occasion te go te the court house and they aie insulted by these young scamps. Seme of the ceuuty officials as well as lawyers aud ether "ncrsens haviug business in the court house'aic complaining about this nuisance and if it cannot be abated by the janitor himself he had better call en the police and have the young scoundrels locked up. A Dime Nevel Here Who Kelgcs Insanity Toe Late. On Mendav last a veuns man named Geerge 31c Alpine, aged 18 or 19 years, call ed at the premises of Mr. A. P. Mcllvain, near Bellemente, te pay his respects te the family for whom he had weiked as a hired boy a year or two age. He was kindly received and remained with the family as a guest until Wednesday night about 11 o'deck,at which time he aroused the family by meaning and groaning and complain ing of being seriously ill. Mr. Mcllvain went down btairs te get him some old brandy te relieve him.- On entering Mc Alpine's loom the latter drank the brandy, handed back the glass, and then slipping behind Mr. Mcllvain locked the deer, drew a heavy revolver, peiuted it atMcIlvain's breast and commanded him net te utter a word en peril of his life. AstenUhed aud alarmed, Mr. Mcllvain, said, "George.den't sheet me,"at the same instant throwing up bis arm and dashing aside the pistol. A scuffle ensued during which Mcllvain get McAlpine's linger in his mouth and bit it severely, but his artificial teeth weie net streug enough te retain his pi isener. The noise made during the scuffle, alarmed Mrs. Mc Ilvain, who hastened dewu stairs aud vigorously lang the large farm bell, the sigual usually used among farmers te let their neighbors knew that something is wrong. The bell alarmed McAlpine, who, breaking away from Mcllvain, ran down staiis with the design el escaping. iui meantime, the neighbors, aroused by the bell, weie hurrvinc? te the house from all quarters ; and Mc Alpine ran up stairs and jumped into bed. Among the first te arrive en the scene was Win. Tayler, who, notwithstanding Mr. Mcllvain'8 remonstrance and fears hat McAlpine would sheet him, insisted en going upstairs and arresting the rob. ber ; and up he went and dragged him by the hair from his bed. McAlpine at once feigued insanity, but he was secured and disarmed, and taken by the crowd that had assembled te the office of W. C. Frew, esq., of Paradise, where he was given a hearing. Among the effects were found the large revolver that he had diawn en Ir. Mcll vain and a smaller one. both being very finely finished pieces ; two boxes of cartridges te fit the pistols. Alse a very line and formidable bowie-knife and belt ; four masks, a heavy false beard of a red dish gray color, a fine compass, a bottle of ether and a sponge, a very fine Sheffield razor, a geld Masonic cress, a geld breast pin iu the form of a gun, another in the fei m of a pistol, a line geld pencil case, two handkerchiefs and some papers and letters. McAlpine continued te feign insanity during the hearing until the magistrate was about te open a sealed letter, when he suddenly said, "Don't open that letter ; it is my private property aud you have no light te break the seal." The magistrate opened the letter, which was written by the prisoner and addressed te his mother, who lives in Philadelphia. M no writer in forms his mother that he had get iute trouble at Phccnixville, where he had been working recently ; that it was net safe for him te remain in this part of the country ; that he was going te enclose her $25, and then stai t for San Antonie, Texas, te see his brother Will : that hereafter he was going te be a geed boy and would net give his parents any mere trouble. The brother Will above referred te is no ether than the famous marksman " Wild Hairy," whoa few years age astonished Lancaster neenle bv his wonderful rille sheeting at his gallery in Centre Squaie, aud who during his stay here was arrested and sent te jail for pulling a pistol en Gcerge 11. Hartman, the ltvciyman. Anether paper found among McAlpine's effects was an oath drawn up, but net sinned. It was hi3 intention te make Mr. Mcllvain sign it after he had robbed him. It is te the effect that the subscriber does most solemnly swear before Almighty Ged, and en this Bible, that he will never publish, nor cause te be published, nor iu any manner whatsoever divulge anything that transpires in this house te-night. After testimony substantially as above had been given befere 'Squire Frew, that functionary committed McAlpine te the county prison te answer for felonious assault-, and batterv. and he was taken te the county prison by Constable Miller, j After the hearing he confessed that it was his intention te chloroform Mr. and Mrs. Mcllvain, rob them of all the money and jewelry he could find, and, if they should awake and resist him befere he had finished the job, he would make them sign the oath as above, and en their refusal te de ie would sheet them. It was then his intention te send as much money as he could spaic te "his mother and then make his way te the far West. His plan of chloroforming them failed by reason of their having their room deer locked, and he then feigned sickness for the purpose of effecting the robbery, but Mrs. Mcllvain'3 prompt ringing of the alarm bell frustrated his plans. He says he did net think it would net be necessary te sheet Mr. Mcllvain, as he believed he could frighten him into giving up his valuables by a mere threat of sheeting him ; but that he would have shot him had it been necessary. McAlnine is well-known iu this city. Through the recommendation given him by Mr. Mcllvain, he secured position in the Inquirer punting office, where the only thing especially noticed about him was his inveterate devotion te novel read ing, especially of the the yellow cover va licty After being for some mouths in the Inquirer office he appears te have gene te Phcenixvlllc where he was known as Gee. Harris. He also at times took the name et Geerge Williams and ucerge Lytic the last name being that of his sister, Mrs. Lytic, who followed the photographic busi ness a few years age at Leaman Place, afterwardsjrcmeviug te Philadelphia. Georire's narents are said te be reputa ble peeple who have had great trouble growing out of the waywardness of their sons. Frem the letter written but net sent te his mother, it is supposed that Geerge may have been engaged iu rob reb bcries or burglaries ater ucar Phceaixvill j, aud that the pistols, knife, Masonic badgj and jewelry found among his effects may have been a part of his plunder. The attempted robbery is certainly a remarkable one and has occasioned intense excitement in the neighborhood of Paradise. Tfie Cerk Makers In Session.
