Iu that part of East Ilempfleld te the south of Landisville, midway between that village and Silver Spring, among fer tile dales and gently sloping hills the tramp turns up with annoying frequency. The settlement is an old one, se old that many of the buildings whose hospitable reefs protected au elder generation are new supplanted by new aud mere sub stantial ones. Large farms are "few and far between," but here and there unculti vated plots covered with trees are yet te be found. There arc many picturesque nooks affording scenic interest. Meadows divided by rippliug brooks, aud thickly dotted with ticcs abound in springs of the best limestone water. Through spring, the warm summer days, aud early fall before the trees are dressed iu the "sere and yellow leaf, " patrons paitakc of the cool waters and lounge away the time in the lefrcsh- lug shade. 1 hey are of the vagrant type and the thrifty tanners aie the object of their excursions. They seldom, if ever, get tin cold shoulder, and the '"hand outs " in se old and thickly settled neigh neigh neigh botheod afford him geed living. He ap preciates it and bcrausi- of his lucky let the place has been v. ill advertised anions "his sisters aud hi i u-ins aud his aunts," besides numerous -4;augersin-law in his profession. The.- e ult-iepeated visits were becoming impes-iik-ns, when the tramp catcher, who was scut for, came aud took with him several in a 'bus provided for the purpose. Fer several succeeding weeks this warfaie upon them barred them from the neighboiheod. Then they cautiously rcappeaicd. During that time natutc was being met amorphosed aud new assumes a wintry as pect. The crops have all been gathered and the iaudsc.ipc except heie and theie, dotted by by c ergrceus, presents a mel ancholy picture. A large lime kiln whose front is covered with a shed which can be closed up with two large doers, is a snug invitation which he cannot resist. Many a time the smoke cutis above the kiln from the lire fed by mateiial fiem a piece of woodland close by. Around it are gath tied the tramps and iu the lurid glare of lire they while the time away by cracking jokes and relating stories. As a rule they aie ignorant aud very superstitious. There are exceptions and among them may be found well-iul'ermcd young men. Of all the ones who ever put in appearance iu that vicinity none made se long a stay and went away se well-known as two odd specimens a man and wife the former a German aud the latter a thin-faced, strikingly tall female, of middle-age, attired iu a ragged filthy gaib such as was seen before there, who at one time came from Erin's turbu lent sheie. The man is younger by a few years. A lack of proper attention te his toilet gives him a repulsive semblance and au unnatural complexion. Their health is broken down and they leek elder than they really are. The lives they lead arc calculated te icsult in nothing better. They lead a loving, vagabond life. An old horse whose let is all the worse from having fallen into their possession, draws from place te place for them what in its better days would be wet thy te be called a market wagon. It is a dilapidated concern. The top is knocked into manifold form, aud what re mains of it is kept in position by the quan tity of goods packed within. Wc doubt very much if the gypsies themselves arc able te give an inventeiy of the property. It was seen as it passed along the read and a catalogue of the articles contained therein would till a column of the Intel ligencer. Perched en the topmost arti cle sat a turkey looking above the shabby top. Resides the American biid, which was very conspicuous from its position and no less se from the amount of leathers for se small a bird, weie a number of dogs. The writer ddn't attempt te count them because he felt sure th.it the attempt would have ended with no accurate result. Ats eldeily and ictircd farmer who lives close te whete they held forth duiing their stay in that vicinity had a chat with them, lie says they told him they have twenty-live, all seits and colors, ranging from the poodle up te the hound and from the deepest, black te the purest white. The woman does the begging and experience has given her an otleusive amount of temerity. She gees out. en her foraging expeditions accompanied by six dogs, no mere or no less. She cairics a big kettle coveted with ditt and a small tack slung ever her shoulder. They stay at a place as long as the people give them anything te cat. Their stay there was through a protracted spell of damp, laiuy weather, making it net any tee pleasant indoors. They seemed te stand it well. They were close by the desirable shed iu au old stone quarry adjeiuiug. Rather than occupy it they built a tire of pine rails and stumps iu the hollow and sat around it aud slept aieuud it with their horse and dogs. Where de they go iu winter'.' "Win ter didn't seem te discencejt them iu the least. They arc out every winter, have been and expect te be in the future. They arc thinly clad, and the wonder is net. that they dread the cold weather's approach, but that they have se long withstood its cfl'ectf. They betray a spirit that plainly indi cates they feel Haltered en reeeiviu call ers They are talkative and try te be very entertaining. A party from a neigh boring school called upon them eue at uoeu. They spent au hour theie gratify ing their curiosity. One of the little boys, aged about 12 years, venltucd tee close te their conveyance and a big hound pounced upon him tearing his pantaloons aud let the marks of his teeth upon the calf of one of his legs. The boy was mere scared than scarred. The dogs aie what give them the trouble. The fanners de net se much ob ject te feeding the man and woman as te providing for the dogs. Besides that they annoy aud chase the cattle in the fields. A yeuug man named Philip Dattisen shot oue while iu the act of pursuing the cattle. A hunter of Lancaster, who was after game in that vicinity, lest a valuable setter. He was after him twice, en Sunday and Thursday, but could net recover him. Fer his bcnclit we'll state that the wanderers are new encamped atGctz's grove, near Rohrerstown, and it is very likely the missing canine is with them. These nomads, houseless, indigent and uncomfortable as they seem, who refuse te wrestle for their daily bread are no doubt contented with their station, for they knew net what responsibility is and ex perience has hardened them te it. away. They did no damage except te break off a shade tree. Dellaveu sampled 205 cases of tobacco for jSIssley, Kraybill & Ce., last week. M, U. S. Tobacco Journal. The stillness in our market continues, we may almost say with unabated vigor. Nothing has occurred that might tend te change the tenor of the market nor the views of buyers and sellers. Few care te buy aud few catc te sell. It is impossible te state when a renewal of activity will set in. It may take weeks, it may be to morrow. Our market is easily unsettled. A few large transactions and half a dozen brokers en a gallop through the market with mysterious faces and with mysterious hints are enough te cause commotion and induce transactions ; en the ether hand, a few days age without notice of sales aud yawniug brokers sufiice te make every body feel like doing nothing and wait for something te turn up. Theie is no geed reason why prospective buyers should stay away from the market, for there is little possibility of prices geiug down within next twelve months. All the leaf en hand will be consumed in this country, and even should the importation of Sumatia con tinue it may prevent a tisc in piiccs for seed leaf, but it cannot cause a decline. It will be well for mauufactuiers, there fore, te make their selections of leaf while yet there are selections te be had. The success of the Liberal party in Germany new precludes the possibility of a tobacco monopoly there and, therefore, our chances for an expert of leaf much improved. Nevertheless this new ttini of events cannot allcct our market one way or the ether. All this country might pessi uiy spare ler years te ceme are very com mon and lillery goods, which in no way interfere with the prices of better mate rial. With all the efforts that have been made within the past two years te pre dtice a larger tobacco no materially larger yield has been obtained, and it seems as if the culture of seed lcat tobacco in this country can only advance in size slowly aud by degrees This is another factor against any theory that might proclaim a decline iu prices of seed leaf tobacco in the near future. The sales of the week ran as fellows : Pennsylvania Crep '80 : 050 cases, low ruuuing, 12 te M cents ; medium, 18 cents. Connecticut Crep '80 : 000 cases, part Ilousatenic, at 23 te 25 cents ; balance medium, runuing 1G te 18 cents. Ohie Crep '80 : 200 cases : fillers te 4 cents : geed rimmus, 11 te 12 cents.
