The big ball shines like the sun. In elo ele valing it te its place it was covered with cotton laps ami canvass te prevent it fiem being injured. The steeple leeks very pretty in its new coat of paint. Paste Wagen Unset. Dedge & Sen's Cerk Factory Burned. LOSS $40,000. TUB CAl'bE OF THE Filth. PeilU or the Occasion. This morning about 9 o'clock the engine house attached te G. W. Dedge & Sen's cork factory, 225 East Fulton street, took fire and in a few minutes was wrapped in flames. The fire spread rapidly te the main building, a three-story brick struc ture, and also te the smaller brick build ings and sheds attached and these, tee, were seen in flames. Tiie men and women at work in the factory get out safely, but with the exception of books and papers aud a few bags uf manufactured cork nothing was saved. The building and the urcatcr part of the machinery te A. W. Russel, aud were probably weith nearly $10,000. He has an insurance of $2,000 en the building aud $1,000 en the machinery, $2,000 of which is in the Delaware Mutual, of which Jehn Zimmerman is agent, and 81,000 in another company. Dedge & Sen's less will probably ex ceed $30,000, en which they have insur ances amounting te 18.000 or $0,000, di vided among several companies. As seen as the fire was discovered the employees were hurried out of the main building and it was closed in hopes of con fining the flames te the engine house and sheds, but burning biauds appear te have been blown into the up-staiis windows aud set en fire the mass of combustible material stored in the upper story. The firemen were a lit tic slew in reach ing the ground, most of the companies be ing compelled te drag their heavy engines by hand. The American, which was first en the gieund, took position at the corner of Shippcn and Fulton streets and threw a heavy and well-directed stream. The Friendship took position in Lime street near the lailread bridge and also did geed set vice in preventing the spread of the flames te adjoining piepcrty. The Union took position in Chestnut street between Lime and Shippcn, aud during p.ut of the time had an insufficiency of water, owing te the small calibre of the water main aud the further disadvantage of having the water taken from her by steamers en each side of her. The Sun took the ping in Lime street, between Orange and Chestnut, and threw a powerful stream through twenty-three sections of hose, a part of which was loan lean ed it by the Humane company, whose steamer was net in service. The Washington was in Chestnut street cast of Shippen, and threw a solid aud continuous stream. The Sluflier at first took position at the corner of Lime aud Cliesnut, but being unable te get water, owing te the tlmuLt of the Sun and ether steamers en lower ground, changed her position te Walnut street, between Lime and Shippcn, and threw a stream upon the fire from the op posite side of the railroad. While the interior of the main building was in flames two of the long ladders of the Empire were raised against the front wall, and a party of firemen mounted the ladders te threw a stream of water into the upper stories. While they were thus engaged the front wall began te give way, and in a moment mere the upper part of it was pushed out into the street, and one half of the reef, including the burning rafters and sheathing, came thundering down into Fulton street a seething mass of living coal and flame. The men jumped from the ladder and had barely time te escape the impending danger. Their names as far as wc have been able te learn them are II. Gensemer, Frederick Eisc man, Winficld Weaver, Jehn Flcnncrd and Jeseph Walker, all of whom escaped with but slight scorching. Seme of the men en the ground were less fortunate. Edward Peters, ".residing at "MO Net th Lime sticet, was seriously burned about the face, neck, hands and arms. He was taken te Cochran's drug store, where his wounds were dressed. A young man named Stcinhauscr was f-e badly burned that he had te be taken home in a carriage. Jehn Burger, was badly cut in the face by glass falling from the shattered win dows. J. Walter Reed was injured in the eyes and the right hand. These men were at tended te by Dr. Fitzpatrick. A young man named Weaver had his arm cut. Herace Martin, a seu of J. B. Martin, is reported severely hurt. The large ladder standing against the wall of the burning building when the reef fell was crushed te pieces and it is marvelous that a dozen men, at least, were net also crushed te death in the narrow street, as the reef that fell into it blocked it from curb te curb. Daniel Trcwitz, jr.. engineer of the Friendship steamer, had the middle fin ger el his right hand crushed by being caught in the cress-held of the engine, lie will probably lese the first joint. The burning of the factory is net only a severe less te Mr. Russell and the Messrs. Dedge, who were overrun with work and were, receiving mere orders than it was possible for them te fill, but also te the large number of men and women, boys and girls, who were employed in the fac tory and who are thrown out of work by the accident G. W. Dedge is absent from the city, being en a business tour in the West. He has been quite unfortunate in sustaining looses, his factory having been once before badly damaged by fire, and recently his safe was blown te pieces by burglars. The Union engine became disabled at the fire, one valve coming loose and another came entirely oft. Tne Insuranee. The total amount of insurauce en the binned building was $16,500, divided as follews: $438.10 en the machinery; $7,600.08 en raw and manufactured stock ; $109.G0 en office furniture and fixtures ; $3,285.52 en cork weed and shavings ; $5,000 special en stock. The insurance is in the following companies ; all except one, are represented by Bailsman & Burns. 11. R. Brencman being agent for the Phecnix of Londen. JEtua, of Hartferd, $3,000 ; Londen As surance, of Londen, $1,000 ; Phoenix, of Hartferd, $1,200 ; Commercial Union, of Londen. $1,000 ; British America, el To Te Te eoneo, $1,000 ; Heward, of New Yerk, $2,150 ; Merchants, of Newark, $2,500 ; Phecnix, of Louden, $1,000 ; Lancashire, of Englaud,tC,500. Fall of a Wall. The Pennsylvania railroad runs directly in rear of the "factory through a deep cut, and en the bank of this cut was built the foundation of a brick building used for the grinding of cork shavings. Excessive use of water en the burning building under mined the foundation, and about half-past one o'clock this afternoon it fell with a crash, rolled down into the cut, blocked up the railroad track, and for a short time delayed the trains. By neon the fire was get well under control, and all the steamers except the Friendship and American were sent home. The two steamers named remained en duty and are en duty as wc go te press. Unless the water is constantly applied the names break out afresh. The number of hands thrown out of employment by the fire is about fifty. The buildings destroyed are the main factory, the engine house, the boiler house, the grinding mill, (all of brick) and a large frame shed used for the storage of manu factured cork. Jeseph Hughes, engineer, whose duty is te run the grinding mill as well as the engine, says he was in the mill at the time the fire broke out in the boiler house. He don't knew hew it originated, but prob ably a spark from the furnace was thrown out and ignited some cork shavings that were in fee room. On his return te the room it was in flames and there was no means at hand te save it. The main building was set en fire by sparks entering the epen windows in the rear. The cork burned se rapidly that the flames had made great headway almost before an alarm could be given. Base Ball. The game of base ball between the Iron sides and Friendship clubs will take place en the grounds of the former club and will be called at 2 o'clock. This prom prem ises te be the liveliest game of the season and both clubs, together with their friends, feel very confident. The game will be very largely attended, and it is a great pity that it is net played en a ground where a small admission could be charged. Cellar Hene Broken.
