Mr. Johnsten took the fleer and spoke at some length. Determined te "Stick." Washington, April 4. The Republican senators in caucus this morning decided te continue their efforts te proenre the pas sage of the pending resolution for an im mediate election of Senate offices by ad hering persistently te the policy and pre gramme heretofore pursued. This determination was reached after an exhaustive interchange of views and by a vote which is said te have been substantially unanimous. The caucus discussed the suggested expediency of allowing the dead-lock te be broken from time te time by executive sessions for the confirmation of uncontested nominations, but it was de cided that at least for the present this course would be unadvisable. The only ether matter touched upon at te-day's meeting was the long continued delay in transporting the remains of the late Senater Carpenter te Wisconsin, and it was agreed en all hands that the mem bers of the Senate committee appointed for. this purpose should make immediate arrangements for pairing and proceed te perform their mission. RUSSIA. Seme Rigorous Measures Adopted. Loxdex, April i A dispatch from St. Petersburg te tbe Timet says : " The first measuie established by the new elective council of twenty-live, has been te invest the city with a chair of Cossacks patriots, with pests of officers and police en all the reads, se that no ingress or egress el per sons is allowed until subjected te a strict investigation by the commanders of the pests. Net even special passports arc yet permitted. A second measure is new beng elaborated by which every traveler arriving at a railway station will, after examination by the police, be handed ever te a cabman, who must deliver hiin at tha designation declared te the police, or promptly report any change in the desig nation. A third measure was proposed and vigorously applauded at a general meeting of the 228 deputies composing the temporary council, but as yet the council of 25 lias refused te sanction the measure, which was that certain members of the council should take -turns in watching the streets through which the emperor might pass, thus iucurring grave responsibility should anything untoward occur. It would be uutre te say that tha councils measures arc unanimously approved in St.. Peters burg." . ItEACONSFIELO. Dangerous Illness of the .Kx-1'reuiler. Loxdex, April 4. Dr. Bruce visited Lord Beacensiicld this morning, as well as Doctors Kidd and Quain. This is thought te indicate a relapse in the condition of the patient. The doc tors upon being interviewed stated tlnit the patient's condition is as favorable as they could expect, but the cold winds arc seriously interfering with his progress. Dr. Eidd will visit the patient at inter vals during the day. There will be a fur ther consultation te-night. Dr. Bruce has arranged te relieve Dr. Kidd in actually watching the patient.
