THE APPItOACiliso HoL'IDAYS.—We notice our storekeepers and others have commenced to display their goods and wares in view of the approaching holiday season. This is an excellent plan, as it gives those on the lookout for presentation gifts, an opportunity to see and •`think over the matter" before deciding. There are many, however, who do not have time to go out, and are in a quandary where to go for the purpose of making their holiday purchases. The or ly way M reach this class, and indeed many other classes, is for those who have anything, to sell,to ad vertise judiciously in the papers, or by bills or circulars. We invite all such to the columns of the Np,r/ or to the jobbing department of our establishment, feeling assured that the outlay in either branch will bring ill ample returns. Tlir•. This distinguished personage did not picture the result of an opposite course hut left ns to infer that he spoke from experience if nor by authority. and although it is quoted by the vulgar it pos sesses more merit than many other phras es, written by ancient philosophers and which have been quoted so often by the learned as to have become classic in the history of the world. If every person fol lowed this injunction ; sin and error would cease to exist ; human mind and action would produce nothing but harmony and man would occupy the position. that na ture's Goil has designed for him. I have been led to this reflection by noticing with what tenacity our municipal authorities cling to certain antediluvian precedents, set by some of the past generations. when to continue in error is more expensive than it would be to establish reform. The grade for the gutter along Front, and. be tween Locust and Walnut, appears to have been established at some former per iod of the world, probably when they had giants, so as to make it two feet deep at the corner of Walnut and Front ; and the result is that some six inches of mud has to be shoveled out some three or four times a year. The excuse for maintaining this nuisance, is that the grade is slight, and that w.tter will run down hill. I concede that 'both these reasons are true, but I be lieve if the gutter was perfectly level and only oneineh deep, that the inhabitants of Front street would keep it swept out as clean as thAr pavem^nts; if they did not it could never get truest than full ; and one inch of mud is preferable to six, especial ly in dog days. Whenever it is cony ion ient I would recommend that our City Fathers establish the one inch depth for mud and till up this ditch, for it cannot be called a gutter in it; present shape. `,•,.C. `'..
