Prom the Oil Regions DUNICARD TOWNSHIP, PA. Dec. sth, '64. DEAR SPY :—The influx of Capitalists to this region continues without cessation. 'l3th since my last from this place, -Dun kard" has been obliged to forego the al tno4t exclusive attention which had hith erto been' lavished ;Ton it,and divide the honors with the territory bordering on the neighboring streams. George's creek and Cheat River, the first emptying Into the Nonongehela below, and the Litter above " Dunkard," have been the scenes of considerable excitement within the last few days, on account of unmistakea ble evidences of the presence of the much sought f r Petroleum. My business has prevented me from N isiting either of these Aoealities, and 1 can ottl . give you sue(' information as 1 have received from others. From Georges creek I have but little information further titan that oil was struck one day last week, and that operators there are so I , allgUille. ot• their enterprises that the price or shares in the different wells and companies have in some instances been advanced two him dred per cent. lint if the reports from Cheat river are fully verified, those who have invested there in the hope of strik • ing oil will Bud it no i• cheat" to them. .May they meet with success second only to that enjoyed by operators on •• Dunk ard." Your', I.3IILTIMORE, Md., Dec. 3d, '6l DEAF. SPY :—Having nothing to en gage iny special attention this morning, and feeling inclined to have a chat with you and your many readers, I have de termined to give you a short letter. We have but little news of importance to chronicle this morning save the pret tg little victory of General Thntnas over the hosts of Hood. iu 'rennemsee. Over thirty battle flags, one thousand prison ers, and six thousand killed nod wound ed is•rather a severe repute to meet with 'on the occasion of his first series of as saults, which are to hurl back the Union , forces to the Ohio border and should he per silt in such furious assaults, it would nut take many to annihilate his -grand Con-' federatearmy." I am not a military wan, but according to my private nw .e of reasoning, I am of the impression that. the rebel CI - offer:Ai—will find himself in rather a strange looking trap ere he pro ceeds touch further north ; and realize the troth of the assertion that Thomas is one of the best yankee Generals. and not to be easily /food-winicco , by daring rebels. The battle and victory at Frank lin on Friday was greater than first rep resented, and a much clearer succesi fur the union arms—God grant they may continue. EDITOR While Thomas is meetin4 with such great sauces in his campaign, we have no le:s _ratifying intelligenee front Sher man, in his grand and victorious march through the very heart of the Confeder acy. Some of the Richmond papers ad mit of his sueeess.and censure the reb el President fir leavin:2; the gates of the Confederaey 01,en to invasion by Slier man. They (try pitifully about Mors campaign, and say he has been "switoh. e d on the wrong track. They do not espect much front Hood's preient movement, and in my opinion they will not be disappointed. How much better it would have been to have had the rebel artlVS' iu Shermait's front, instead of live ! hundred miles in his rear I Poor rebels. dirm—for "no's' is the winter of their discontent:" Ere this letter shall appear in print we will have highly im portant news both from Thomas and Sherman, and, if my predictions are not very wild, from the noble old army of the Potomac. Movements are on foot, I understand, which will electrify the whole country, and in all probabiliy, wind up the fortunes of this wicked re bellion. Our flag will wave over every foot of rebel soil, and we shall again have one nationality, one Union, and be one unconquerable people. The article in question is so in congruous, lengthy and absurd, that it might be '•casting pe:u•ls benre swine,' to attempt to show him the erroneou - ness of the positions he assumes, and yet the good name of the christian churches in our midst should not be suffered to be aspersed even by one so muddle•brained as to write about how •‘ the march of human progress has been making rapid strides," and how •° christianity is the fundamental base of all things." The gentleman talks about • believing a truth becanie it is true," and about 'charity compelling hhu:' &e., awl yet 111,,statements respect ing the christian churches are as false as they are uncharitable. The Greeks and llonmns were a highly civilized le ilJe. and what ' was their civilization but a refinement or idolatry, which manifested itself in the cruel rage which it einployel to crush the church in its first efforts at christian izing the world. The religion taught in our churches and lived by those who are properly influenced by these teaching-z,is the same religion as that taught by Christ and his apostles. Civilization is not the offspring of christianity. While the true christiau is the only true gentleman, and while a christian community is always a civil community, still civilization is not the mission of christianity. I The mission of christianity is the moral renovation and the final salvation of our race, and while Government, Edu cation, Science, Commerce, &c., all re ceive an impulse from the influence di rect and indirect which chri‘dum teach ings are ever exerting, yet civilization is no more the measure of religion than a man's literary acquirements is of his piety. The suggestion that there "is to ire christianity practiced out of the church es than in them," and that therefore the churches now existing should be disband ed, and a general church be organized which would have those to govern it who are godle , s being simply civilized, is fit only to occupy the brain of an imbecile and one which scarcely the hold infideli ty- of t worst sceptic could have origi nate I.
