Smith and Miss Brink, of Sterling Run, called on Emporium friends Tuesday evening. Miss Ellla McFarland, of Bradford, is visiting in town, guest of James Daugherty and mother. E. G. Coleman leaves to-night for Nantucket Island, Mass., to visit old friends for several weeks. Mrs. Daniel Sullivan, of Cameron, was a PRESS visitor last Saturday and placed her name on our roll of elect. Jas. J. Russel and Win. Little, of Sinnamahoning, visited in Emporium on Tuesday. They did not (?) come up to see the game. Mr. and Mrs. A. K. Russell, of Lan" caster, Pa., are stopping at the New Warner, Mr. Russell having charge of pipe line work in this section. The friends of Mrs. A. J. Rogers will regret to learm that she is quite ill at her brother's home, Mr. J. M. Spaf ford, East Coudersport, Pa. John Robert Dodson took his first oucing this summer, going to Cold Spring on Monday. He took a few of his friends—Mrs. J. F. Parsons, Mrs. O. F. Elwell and Miss Ophelia Dod son—along to assist in the fun. Dr. Leon Felt returned from Phila delphia on Saturday, armed with his diploma. He will soon open dental rooms in Emporium This will give our people two first class dental parlors. Liobt. Graham, (formerly of Empori um), who conducts the boarding house at Calder Brick Works, is as happy as a lord, all on account of the beautiful girl baby that arrived at his home, last Saturday. The boys all smoke at Robert's expense. Mrs. R. A. Courtwright, of Brock port, and Mrs. Nugent, of Salamanca, N. Y., arrived in Emporium Monday evening. Mrs. J. L. Wheeler accom panied them to Canada on Tuesday, to meet their husbands, who are located on their mining claims, two hundred miles north of North Bay. M. B. Zwald, one of our old reliable subscribers was a PRESS caller Monday evening and pushed the date on his paper into 1906. Mr. Z. is employed in the Emporium tannerv and has always been a faithful employee as well as a good citizen, and last but not least, a true Republican. Elmer E. Whiting and F. B. Housler arrived last Saturday from Somerset / Dounty, cominy overland route. They brought six horses with them. The Whiting & Thomas contract has been completed, although the Messrs. Whit ing contemplate purchasing another tract of timber in that section. Hon. Josiah Howard is doing the Portland, Oregon, Exposition, Mr. Howard being one of Pennsylvania's delegates, appointed by Gov. Penny packer, to attend the National Good Roads Convention. Mr Fred Julian went to New York and Philadelphia last evening to be ab sent several days. Harry Moorehouse, of Pittsburg, is calling 011 his trade in town to-day, and visiting with relatives. The venerable Mr. O. Smith, father of our friend E. J. Smith, left Emporium on Tuesday for Conn , to visit friends during the summer. Mr.and Mrs. W. H. (;. Walker of Calder Brick Works, stopped in town yesterday, while enroute for Buffalo. Mr. Walker made the PRESS a short business call. John Weisman who visited Joshua Bair and family over Sunday, return ed to Glean on Monday, taking his children back with him. Miss Rosa Bair went to Olean with them to re side. The beautiful spruce shade tree in front of J. I J . Pelt's residence h;i» been removed, much to the disgust of the English sparrows. It had grown so rapidly that it shut out the town view. Mr. A. F. Walker, proprietor of the New Cameron House at Cameron, transacted business in town yesterday. He remembered the A-RESS Mr. Walker is all right and stands well with our |:eeple. Mr. Jerome J. Morgan, of Warren, visited his aunt Mrs. Lizzie Hinkle, over Sunday. The young man was one of the State College graduates last Thursday, capturing a Carnegie Scholarship prize. Mrs. L. E. Jones and three children, ofLaquin, arrived in Emporium yes terday to visit with Mrs. Belle Beattie and family, on Sixth street. Mrs. Jones was formerly Miss Minnie Beattie,. daughter of William Beattie. James Creighton, who conducts suc cessfully the bowling and billiard room near P. & E. R. R., at the same time having the contract for unload ing material at Emporium 'Furnace is a veritable "chip of the old block." His respected father, as we knew him years ago, always was prompt to re new his subscription to the PRESS and Jas. reminds us so much of him—just quietly lays down the long green. NOTES OF INTEHEST. A freight train passed through Em porium Monday evening with several car loads of the wreck gathered up at Wilcox; also hauling the dead engine. The train was enroute for Renovo shops. Changed Hands. J. M. Olcen, of Clearfield, Pa., who took possession of the Valley House yesterday, was in town Wednesday meeting our citizens. Mr. Olcen comes highly recommended and carries with him gilt edge tastimonials from Influ ential Clearfield citizens. Large Class Confirmed. Upon the visitation of Rt. Rev. Bishop Fitz Maurice, of Erie, to Em porium last Monday morning, a class of seventy-five were confirmed. The church was literally packed with par ents and friends. Revs. Downey, Macken and Becker assisted. Bishop FitzMaurice confirmed a class of 42 at Driftwood Monday afternoon. Almost a Fatal Accident. Last Friday, Lemuel Evans,one of C. B. Howard & Co's mill foremen, met with an accident that came mighty near being fatal. A large belt broke and striking Mr. Evans on his head hurled him over a conveyor. Had he fallen on the conveyor he would have been cut to pieces. He was un conscious when picked up, yet his in juries were not serious and he is now at work. It was a close call and for tunate. The State Automobile Law. The automobile law recently passed by the Pennsylvania Legislature and approved by the Governor, provides that the speed limit in cities and bor oughs shall be six miles an hour. On the country roads the limit is three minutes to a mile. This law is daily violated in the rate of speed. All own ers of automobiles are required to take out a license, costing $5, and carry front and back lights. The penalties for violations of this law are fixed at from $lO to §25 for the first offense and §25 to §IOO for the second offense The fines goto the improvement of the public roads. A good object.
