THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, FRIDAY, MARCH 19, 1869, LITERATURE. KEVIKW OF NKW UOOK8. PBB-msTOBio Nations. By John M. Baldwin, A. M. TabliBhed by llarper & Brother. Philadelphia Agents: Tamer Bros. & Co. This work gives a rapid and comprehensive survey of the facta and traditions that hare eome down to us concerning the pre-hlslorio nations of the tarth. The author expends a rather unnecessary amount of warmth in disputing the chronological estimates of Arch bishop Usher and others who have endeavored to oaloulate the time since the creation of the human raoe. Usher's chronnlopv has verv "iffrtkwelght at this day with any one, and none at a 1 with those who have given the Subject any consideration. It is now univer sally admitted by all who have made the least inquiry into the matter, that our raoe is older by unknown thousands of years than is popu larly supposed. We are aocustomed to date ear civilization from that.of Oreeoe, but there are the abundant evidences that Greek culture was Outgrowth of a much more anoient civilization, the reoords of which have passed away, bat leaving rained fragments of mighty works In all the four quarters of the globe as incontesta ble proofs that it did exist. Of course, it is impossible to give any exact data as to what this old oivilizitlon was, or when it existed; and all a writer on the subject can do is to group suoh faots as have been brought to light, and see if a connected chain cannot be con structed frm the broken links. Mr. Baldwin thinks that all the evidence thus far produced goes to show that the oldest civilization of which any record at all has come down to ns had its seat in Arabia, and from this fountain head sprang the civilization of the Chaldees, the Egyptians, the Greeks, and finally the culture ,' of modern Europe and America; while in all probability the Arabian civilization was de rived from a still older source, thus patting the date of man's appearance upon the earth back for indefinite ages. The subject ia one of deep interest, and, despite a somewhat queru lous tone at times, Mr. Baldwin's treatment of It Is calonlated to interest the ordinary reader as well as the student. Thb Horrk in thb Stable and the Field. ; By J. II. Walsh, F. R. C. S. ("Stone henge"); Robert MoClure, M. D., V. S.; and Ellwood Harvey, M. D. PabliBhed by Porter & Coatee. The work of "Stonehenge" upon the horse .has long' been a standard authority in Eng land, and Messrs. Porter & Coates have ren dered a genuine service by republishing it in t the complete and handsome style of the volume before us. The work gives a complete descrip tion of the various varieties of horses, with their anatomy and characteristics. Full con sideration is given to the Bubjects of breeding, treatment of diseases, stable management, breaking, riding, shoeing, etc The work has .been carefully revised by Dr. MoClure, the well-known author of "The Diseases of the 'American Stable, Field, and Farm Yard," who Las contributed copious notes, which add : greatly to the value of the book. Another valuable addition is the essay on the Ameri can trotting-horse by Dr. Ellwood Harvey, of Chester, Penn., a gentleman thoroughly con versant with the subjeot. This essay was written at the urgent request of the publishers, -and embodies the study and research of years. - The work is illustrated with over eighty engravings, among whioh are fine portraits oi some of the most famous American horses. A copious index is given, and fifteen tables of , pedigrees. This valuable work ought to be in the . hands of all who are interested in the subject of horseflesh, and there is no doubt but that it will have a large sale. MeBsrs. J. B. Lipplncott & Co. have Just issued what will be considered by horsemen as a valuable companion to the above-men tioned work, viz., "Seats and Saddles, Bits , and Bitting," by Francis .D wyer, major of : Hussars in the Imperial Austrian Bervioe. The whole subject is oonsidered in a clear, thorough, and practioal manner, by one who has evidently been conversant with it in all its details, and the hints about the construc tion of saddles for various kinds of riding, and other information, will be appreciated by those who have the care and management of horses. The work is handsomely printed, and a oomplete Index is given. From Messrs. Turner Brothers & Co. and : Claxton, Remsen & Haflelfinger we have re ceived "Phineas Finn, the Irish Member," by . Anthony Trollope. Published by Harper & Brothers. This is one of Mr. Trollope's latest works, and it is as attractive as most of its ' predecessors. This writer is sometimes criti eizedas milk-and-watery; bat he has a firm bold upon a very large circle of intelligent . readers, nevertheless. His pictures of the , current, e very-day English society are not only exact but vivid, and his characters are life like portraits of real men and women. If Mr. Trollope does not rise to the height a enm. a lila pnnfamnnvAi-tda ha la wl'Tinnl a rival in his particular line, and his stories are always well worth reading. Messrs. Harper &, Brothers have published "Phineas Finn" in attractive style, with all the origi . nal illustrations by Uillais. D. Ashmead sends ns several of the cheap and popular editions of standard works in . course of publication by D. Appleton & Co. Tbe third ot tbe fifty-cent edition of the , standard poets is "The Poetical Works of t, Thomas Campbell." This gives all of Camp bell's poetical writings, a sketch of his life, and an essay on ms genius. The work is ( printed in good type, and ia certainly cheap at miy oems. - "The Fair Maid of Perth" is the twenty. ieoond volume of the twenty-five-cent edition . f the "Waveiley Novels." This edition will ' be completed in twenty-fire volumes, at six dollars for the Bet. ' f "Snarleyow" is the eleventh volume of the fifty-cent edition of Captain Maryatt's novels. One more issue will oomplete this series, and i then any one who wish to make a boy a present that will certainly be appreciated can do so for tbe sum of $5 50, the prioe of the entire set of twelve volumes. From Turner Brothers & Co. we have re ceived the number of Oar lioyt and Girlt for March 27. XAHrt by Oliver Optio, and published by Lee & Bhepard. PROPOSALS. DEPARTMENT OK HIGHWAYS H RIDERS. NEWKKM.
