In order to receive the Greenhand degree a boy must be enrolled in Vocat ional Agriculture and must have satisfactory plans for programs of supervised far ming The Chapter Farmer deg ree is slightly harder to at tain. The applicant must ha ve a Greenhand degree and at least one year’s instruct ion in Vocational Agricul ture. He must have $50.00 invested and must be able to lead a group discussion for 15 minutes whenever called upon to do so. A maximum of two per cent of the membership of a state is eligible for the degree and the applicant must have a total of $5OO invested. The State Farmer is the highest degree a state association may confer. The American Farmer de gree the highest degree in FFA, is awarded by a nat ional committee. It is again required that the applicant all out an application form which is to be analyzed by the judges. The FFA is self support ing. Many chapters oper ate thrift banks where syste matic and regular saving is encouraged. Chapter income is often supplemented’ by various well-chosen, fund raising activities. In the Manheim chapter we have a seed campaign which usual ly is one of our most de pendable ways to help out financially. Our chapter has a fairly active farming program con sisting of one acre of wheat two acres of com, and eight acres of tobacco. In addition to this we mow the Mem orial Field in the summer and do any custom work we are asked to do. With this farming program we hope to earn enough money to travel to the west coast and see for ourselves how farm ing is done there. The FFA is not all work. Brubaker’s HWY. Immediately before open ing the business part of a meeting, the president will ask, “Future Farmers, why are we here 7 ” All members reply in unison, “To practice brotherhood, honor rural opportunity and responsibil ity and to develop those qu alities of leadership which a Future Farmer should pos ess ’’ We as FFA members sin cerely hope we are accom plishing our purposes. Last June we had eighte en members represent our Chapter at Penn State. Of these members five were in State Band and three in the c tate Chorus. We a 1 so had two members in the Soil Judging Contest in which we wnn first Lancaster had the champion softba’l team of which two members were from Solanco M In September one of our members showed cattle at the State Junior Dairy Show winning first and fifth plac es M M % This year the County Pres’dwit and Treasurer of the FF A. came from our chapter Two members were also members of the Nation al Band M M M M ~We also had members in the local fairs of the count?.
