Page 12 Hazleton Booters: First in C.C. A.C. The 1988 Penn State Hazleton Soccer Team may have taken off on the wrong foot early in the season, but Fate has turned the tables in their favor. Losing their first two games by 2 - 0 deficits dd not do much for morale, • however, the team struck back • with full force. Under coach Tom Fitzwater, the Hazleton Scoters have won 9 of the last 10 games while scoring 34 goals. The last victory on Saturday October 15, 1988 was that of arch-rival Ogontz. Earlier in the semen wins were over teams such as Wilkes-Barre, York, McKeesport, Baptist Bible College, two wins over Lehigh County Community College and a big win over Mont Alto. This fine winning streak leaves the teamwith a 9-2-1 record overall. As for the C.C.A.O (Commonwealth Campus Athletic Conference), the team is in first place with a record of 5-0. Leading the scoring rush is sophomore, Captain Rick Weilminster with an outstanding 12 goals. Three freshmen follow in scoring with 4 goals each. They are: Steve Petko, Franky Fernandez, and Eric Weilminster. Sophomore, Captain Scott Melo has 3 goals while sophomores Matt Davey, Steve Scheider and freshman Rich Tito have scored 2 goals apiece. Bill Reader, a freshman, rounds off scoring with one goal. The Hazleton team is having a (real season, however, injuries have been unavoidable. Rick Weilminster suffers from a pinched nerve in his back. Hopefully, he will be back in action before the end of the season. Fellow team-mate, sophomore Dan Rosseljong fell victim to torn aside ligaments during a recent practice. tlifortunately. Dan will be out for the remainder of the season. Leading foul-man (46). Michael Cardwell and Steve Schelder have been playing with shin splints. Other injuries include: freshman ron Reuter, (broken nose), Franky Fernandez (pulled thigh muscle), and Jeff Muireaney (sprained ankles). Other players on this years squad 'are sophomores, Hos Tran, and Tom Goetz. The remaining are freshmen. Coach Caccese is very confident about this team. He is pleased with the way the team is performing thus far. When asked how this year's team compares with last years, he stated, 'There is no comparison. This year's team has the potential to be as good as the 1983-84 team, who finished with a record of 23-6 and were the Eastern Conference Champions." The Lions are faced with the toughest schedule In the 54 years of the campus' existence. There are ten rookies out of twelve players. "They show a lot of enthusiasm," comments Coach Caccese. 'Offense scores the points, but defense wins the game There are no stars," confesses the coach and "there Is a lot of talent.' He has a good sense about them. A winning season is what is expected of this team. They are hungry for the ball and play well together. "I feel they can win: they are hard workers,' boasts the coach as he observes his team Wring practice. I know the team will do well with Coach Caccese's influence. His warm personality and outstarxing coaching techniques will prove to be successful. The coach declines releasing his starting line-up, but insists each player is an essential part of the team. Broad Hzltn 455-4914 the Highacres Collegian according to GUINNESS 1988-89 Cheerleading Squad The Cheering Spirit The P.S.U. Hazleton 1988-89 Cheerleading Squad made its final selections on September Bth. There were nine girls chosen to cheer along with last years Captain. The members of the squad are Kathy Bilow, Cherry Blazer, Melanie Bomboy (Captain), Karen Manzella, Tina Sandusky and Heather Warfield. The advisor is Carmela Evanko. In order to raise money for team expenses, the girls sponsored a bake sale. Homemade goodies Including fudge, cookies, brownies, raspberry tarts and other treats were on sale in the North and South Dorm Lobbies. The sale was successful with total profits equaling $125.00. Another bake sale is being planned for the near-future. The cheerleaders are also responsible for selecting the Hazleton Campus Nittany Lion. On September 22nd Lion tryouts were held in the upstairs gym. A huge congratulations goes out to Michele Lester, our new Lion, and to Matt BtiWinkle, who is the alternate Lion. The cheerleaders hope to see everyone at the basketball games rooting the players on. As much as the athletes need the cheerleaders, they Ixllb need the support of dedicated fans In order to achieve victory. November 1988 Good Season for Women's Volleyball This was the first year back in the C.C.A.C. for the Penn State Hazleton women's Varsity Volleyball Team. Coached by Shirley Knelly, the team had an exceptional season. The team started out strong defeating Barks, Delaware, wilkes-Barre, and Ogontz. At 4 - 0 the team traveled to the York campus of Penn State to be defeated by York Mont Alto. Hazleton went on to defeat Scranton and lost Schuykill in a close 3 game match to end the first half of play with a 5 - 3 record The second half of the season the team went 4 -4, defeating Delaware, Berks, Scranton and Schuykill. The team lost to York, Mont Alto, Wilkes-Barre and Oooniz. Overall the season record wee 9 - 7. With this being the first year in the conference, the winning season was a big boost to the Women's Volleyball Program. The girls showed exceptional teamwork and determination throughout the season and look forward to being a strong contender for the C.C.A.C. championships in years to come.
