Hazleton
Booters: First
in C.C. A.C.
The 1988 Penn State Hazleton
Soccer Team may have taken off
on the wrong foot early in the
season, but Fate has turned the
tables in their favor. Losing their
first two games by 2 - 0 deficits
dd not do much for morale, •
however, the team struck back •
with full force. Under coach Tom
Fitzwater, the Hazleton Scoters
have won 9 of the last 10 games
while scoring 34 goals. The last
victory on Saturday October 15,
1988 was that of arch-rival Ogontz.
Earlier in the semen wins were
over teams such as Wilkes-Barre,
York, McKeesport, Baptist Bible
College, two wins over Lehigh
County Community College and a
big win over Mont Alto. This fine
winning streak leaves the teamwith
a 9-2-1 record overall. As for the
C.C.A.O (Commonwealth Campus
Athletic Conference), the team is
in first place with a record of 5-0.
Leading the scoring rush is
sophomore, Captain Rick
Weilminster with an outstanding 12
goals. Three freshmen follow in
scoring with 4 goals each. They
are: Steve Petko, Franky
Fernandez, and Eric Weilminster.

goals apiece. Bill Reader, a
freshman, rounds off scoring with
one goal.
The Hazleton team is having a
(real season, however, injuries
have been unavoidable. Rick
Weilminster suffers from a
pinched nerve in his back.
Hopefully, he will be back in action
before the end of the season.
Fellow team-mate, sophomore
Dan Rosseljong fell victim to torn
aside ligaments during a recent
practice. tlifortunately. Dan will
be out for the remainder of the
season. Leading foul-man (46).
Michael Cardwell and Steve
Schelder have been playing with
shin splints. Other injuries
include: freshman ron Reuter,
(broken nose), Franky Fernandez
(pulled thigh muscle), and Jeff
Muireaney (sprained ankles).
Other players on this years squad
'are sophomores, Hos Tran, and
Tom Goetz. The remaining are

Basketball
1988-89
by Chantey Copeland
The 1988-89 basketball season
is underway. Coach Caccese is
very confident about this team. He
is pleased with the way the team is
performing thus far. When asked
how this year's team compares
with last years, he stated, 'There
is no comparison. This year's
team has the potential to be as
good as the 1983-84 team, who
finished with a record of 23-6 and
were the Eastern Conference
Champions."
The Lions are faced with the
toughest schedule In the 54 years
of the campus' existence. There
are ten rookies out of twelve
players. "They show a lot of
enthusiasm," comments Coach
Caccese. 'Offense scores the
points, but defense wins the game
There are no stars," confesses
the coach and "there Is a lot of
talent.' He has a good sense
about them.
A winning season is what is
expected of this team. They are
hungry for the ball and play well
together. "I feel they can win: they
are hard workers,' boasts the
coach as he observes his team
Wring practice.
I know the team will do well with
Coach Caccese's influence. His
warm personality and outstarxing
coaching techniques will prove to
be successful. The coach
declines releasing his starting
line-up, but insists each player is
an essential part of the team.

1988-89 Cheerleading Squad
The Cheering
Spirit
The P.S.U. Hazleton 1988-89
Cheerleading Squad made its final
selections on September Bth.
There were nine girls chosen to
cheer along with last years
Captain. The members of the
squad are Kathy Bilow, Cherry
Blazer, Melanie Bomboy (Captain),
Karen Manzella, Tina Sandusky
and Heather Warfield. The advisor
is Carmela Evanko.
In order to raise money for team
expenses, the girls sponsored a
bake sale. Homemade goodies
Including fudge, cookies,
brownies, raspberry tarts and
other treats were on sale in the
North and South Dorm Lobbies.
The sale was successful with total
profits equaling $125.00. Another
bake sale is being planned for the
near-future.
The cheerleaders are also
responsible for selecting the
Hazleton Campus Nittany Lion.
On September 22nd Lion tryouts
were held in the upstairs gym. A
huge congratulations goes out to
Michele Lester, our new Lion, and
to Matt BtiWinkle, who is the
alternate Lion.
The cheerleaders hope to see
everyone at the basketball games
rooting the players on. As much
as the athletes need the
cheerleaders, they Ixllb need the
support of dedicated fans In order
to achieve victory.
