After defeating con ference rival Pitt-Greensburg Satur day, the team lost to Case Western Re serve in a 6-0 route on Wednesday. The pressure continues to mount with only a few weeks left in the regular season. On Wednesday, Oct. 8, Behrend traveled to Cleveland to take on Case Western in a non-conference match. The Lady Lions suffered a 6-0 loss, their worst of the season, as a talented CWR moved to 8-1-2. Alicia Bardierri and Laura Stokes each had two goals for Case Western. Behrend's record dropped to 8-3. "We didn't get off to a good start," said Coach Dan Perritano. "We struggled from the begin- ning." Case Western scored three times in the first half, and capitalized three more times in the second half. Perritano said the competing against a very fast Case Western team "would make us better down the road." Despite the loss at CWR, the Lady Lions picked up a very important 2-0 AMCC win last Saturday against a Pitt-Greensburg team that's been on fire. The Bobcats had a six game win ning streak snapped, after junior Jen Baker and sophomore Kacie Burns each scored in the first half, giving Behrend the win. The two teams played on a soaked Men's soccer wins big against Pitt-Greensburg by Ray Immekus staff writer The Men's Soccer team defeated Pitt- Greensburg on Saturday October 4th by a score of 3- I to take sole posses sion of first place in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. The Lions controlled the game from beginning to end, in what was prob ably the most important matchup of the regular season for Behrend. The Lions were defeated in last year's AMCC championship game in overtime by Greensburg, and used that game as motivation for Saturday. "It was the biggest motivator I'd have to say. It was pretty bad losing in overtime to them last year when we had the lead, " said junior forward Eric Nyberg. Behrend improved to 6-2-2 with an undefeated 3-0 conference record. The Panthers dropped to 8-2-1 with a 2-1 conference record. Both teams have three conference matches left before the start of the AMCC tourna ment on Nov. 5. Nyberg scored the first goal of the game. unassisted, at the 21 minute mark of the first half. Thirteen min utes later, sophomore defenseman Brian Blaszczyk netted the eventual game winning goal and increased Behrend's lead to 2-0. Woods won games one and five, while Prior pitched a complete game in game three. Shortstop Alex Gonzalez is tied for the most home runs in the play offs with four. Friday, October 10, 2003 Senior co-captain Erin Maurer has been helping to lead the team to victory this year with seven goals and 3 assists. She also said that the team's game field, after rains drenched the Erie area earlier in the week. "There was literally an inch of wa ter," said Baker. assisted by sophomore midfielder Mark Cipriani. The final I I minutes of the half were scoreless and the Lions went into halftime with a solid 2-0 lead. Behrend played mistake-free, re lentless defense the entire game. The offense kicked in with some insurance in the 64th minute. Senior midfielder Andy Layer scored an unassisted goal to up the lead to 3-0. The possibility of a shutout was for gotten in minute 77 when Greensburg sophomore forward Adam Zelcznick scored an unassisted goal to put the Panthers on the board. Behrcnd allowed the Panthers only 3 shots the entire game, while the Li ons managed 13 shots on the Greensburg goalkeeper. The game was a total team effort by the Lions and confidence is sure to be high coming off such a big vic tory. "We all showed a lot of desire and everyone really wanted it a lot and it showed. The bench was really sup portive of everyone on the field," Nyberg stated. Nyberg earned a spot on the AMCC's weekly Best of the Rest list this week for his efforts on Saturday. "It feels good. Rodriguez leads all MLB batters in RBIs, with 11. Pitcher Carl Pavano is leading NL pitchers with two saves. Manager Jack McKeon is one of the oldest managers in baseball, at 72. Baker also credits her defense's outstanding play in holding the Pitt-Greensburg team scoreless. "Conference games are the biggest games," said Perritano, but also added that non conference games are just as important and help to prepare his team for AMCC games. The win also was a sort of sweet revenge against a Pitt-Greensburg team that upset the Lady Lions last year 2- I . Baker said that the Bobcats noticed a difference in this year's team. "We're more physical, our forward's are finishing. and we're more together. - said Baker. The win over the Bobcats put the Lady Lions at 3-0 in AMCC play, where Baker says the team still has its eye on preseason favorite Frosthurg State. Perritano said, "Beating Frosthurg is still our goal, but we have a ways to go before then. - The Lady Lions will not see action against Frosthurg State until the last game of the regu lar season. After the up and down week, Perritano said his team will bounce back positively from Wednesday's loss. The Lady Lions will travel to West Virginia to take on Bethany this weekend. The Lady Bison team is struggling this year, currently stand ing at 0-7-1.
