FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2000 When will Buffalo learn? It wasn't too long ago that Doug Flutie was the talk of the NFL. His short stature and ability to thread a football past big Ted Washington and into the hands of his less than super wide receivers took Buffalo by storm, putting the Bills in Super Bowl contention once again. There was finally a worthwhile story in Buffalo besides the four appearances and losses in Super B; showings in the e; 90s. The story sounded good. Flutie swept into Buffalo to rescue a dying franchise That was, until Wade Phillips decided to rest the Bills' savior for one game. Rob Johnson stepped in and flung some passes into the hands of those same receivers that Flutie spoiled all season. For one game, Johnson performed well in his back-up role. That one game was enough to convince Phillips and the Bills' offices that Johnson should start in the opening week of the playoffs. Keep in mind, one game. One game that Flutie was forced to sit out to rest up for the playoffs. One more time...one game. That one game of success for Johnson "earned" him the starting spot against the Titans. The Johnson-led Bills lost. Whether the Titans' miracle play was unprecedented or not, it hadn't reached the level of shock that a man who earned a playoff spot for the Bills, would watch his back-up lead the Bills to a loss in the first round. That was one season ago. So you would think that the Bills' supposed attitude of opportunity and giving would Behrend Scores Men's Basketball Franklin & Marshall Tourna ment November 17 vs. Elizabethtown L 80-66 November 18 vs. York L 72-68 November 21 vs. W&J W 70-62 (OT) November 28 at Grove City L 74-59 Women's Basketball Behrend Tournament November 17 vs. Dickinson W 62-58 November 18 vs. Westminster W 74-65 Maryville Tournament November 25 vs. Thomas More L 71-70 November 26 vs. Greensboro W 67-51 November 29 vs. W & J W 78-70 Swimming November 16 at Grove Men finished 66 Women finished 66 November 21 at Gannon Men finished 60 Women finished 48 Men's Basketball School Points 1. They gave Johnson an opportunity of a lifetime by giving him the starting job for the 2000-2001 season, despite Flutie's presence. So Johnson led the Bills to a 3-4 start. Not quite the play needed to reach the playoffs, but it appears as though the Bills want to reach the playoffs about as much as the San Diego Chargers do. So Johnson gets hurt. f Bounds Flutie steps in again and wins three straight )n Snyder games. Bills back in contention. Wins one game, oses the next. Bills struggling to stay in ontention. There seems to be some sort If confusing trend going on here. It seems that whenever Flutie starts, the Bills are playoff material. When Johnson starts, the Bills are almost .500. So why can Johnson keep claim to a position that he hasn't proven himself in? When Flutie was on the bench last season, they allowed Johnson to steal the position after one week. When Johnson was on the sideline for three games this season, Flutie simply filled in until their starter was back. If Buffalo has any intention of making the playoffs this season, Flutie should be sweeping through the backfield very soon. Johnson's days of throwing well, but losing, should require quick action. I don't see other teams accepting losing because they have a quarterback they are trying to make something out of. I also don't see other teams with a player of Flutie's ability sitting the bench. Playoffs in Buffalo = Flutie on field.
