THE BEHREND BEACON OVER THE EDGE Ashley Orris has been named this week's Housing and Food Service Athlete of the Week. He is a starting guard for the 20-2 men's basketball team. The Behrend Lions are also atop the AMCC with an 11-0 record, and have secured home court advan tage for the AMCC Tournament on Friday, February 25, and Saturday, February 26. In the conference win over Frostburg that clinched home court, Orris was 3 of 6 from the floor and 5 of 6 at the line for 12 points. Orris also had 4 rebounds and a pair of as sists against Frostburg. In an impor tant win over regionally ranked St. John Fisher, he scored a team-high 14 points, and grabbed a team-high 9 re bounds in a 60-58 win on the road. Orris also had four assists and a steal. On the season, he is currently lead ing the team with 2.8 assists per game, scores 7.9 points per game and works for 4.1 rebounds per game. Orris is a graduate of Union City High School. The win, Behrend's 12th straight, improved the men's record to 21- 2 overall, and 11-0 in conference play. The team's 21 wins ties the record, set last year, for overall wins in a season. Over 500 fans were packed, stand ing-room only, into Erie Hall, high lighting the need for the new Athlet ics and Recreation Center, where Behrend will begin playing its home games next season. But it also pro vided a great environment for the game. "It was a nice crowd here tonight." said Behrend Head Coach Dave Niland. "A great college atmosphere, I think the kids were excited to play, and they knew we were playing a good team." "It's just a great atmosphere," said senior forward John Park. "I don't even think you could stand in the gym. It was packed and it was great. It's a great place to play." Senior night got off to a shaky start, as Behrend found themselves behind for a good part of the first half. Scor ing was slow, and Behrend was down 18-13 with 8:44 to play. An Ashley Orris three-pointer from the top of the circle evened the score 18-18 with 6:54 to play. Orris finished with four points, and had a game-high six as sists. The two teams played strong defen sive basketball, with no team grabbing Women move to 17-6 overall; MCC Tournament by Jason Snyder editor-in-chief On a night that the Behrend women's basketball program honored seniors Carrie Nestor and Tiffany Buck for their contributions to the Lions basketball program, Nestor and Buck showed back their appreciation with performances that exemplified both their careers in their Behrend uniforms. On Senior Night, and the final regular season Carrie Nestor, Penn State Behrend senior, tries to maneuver past a Pitt-Greensburg defender. Earlier in the night, Nestor was recognized at senior night for her career accomplishments. SPORTS a decided advantage. Behrend led by two at the break, 29-27. The trend continued for the first minutes of the second half as well, and with 9:57 to play, Behrend led 41-40. From that point, though, the Behrend defense took over, limiting Pitt- Greesburg to a pair of foul shots and a single three-pointer for the rest of the way. Seniors Andy Lawrence and Chris Hughes scored Behrend's next eight points, and outscored Greensburg 8-1 during that stretch. The lead was 49-42 with 1:27 left in the game. Orris and forward Andy Berchtold hit free throws down the stretch to seal the win. "It was a big game," commented Park. "We knew we had to bring our 'A' game to the court today. Coach Niland added, "I thought we defended very well, and I thought we executed down in the last five minutes when we had to. We made mistakes, but not many." The four seniors all played pivotal roles in the win. Lawrence scored eight points, had five rebounds and three assists. Hughes had 22 points on 10 of 15 shooting, and grabbed six boards. Park scored seven and game at Erie Hall, the seniors sparked the Lions to a 91-71 victory over Pitt-Greensburg, clinching the regular season Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference title. The Lions will host the AMCC Tournament on February 25 and 26 in Erie Hall. Nestor added to her assist record (529) at the college with ten assists and stole the ball three times to tally 291 career steals, second on the school's all-time list. Nate Willson scored four points, had six rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block. "I thought Nate Willson was teriffic tonight," Niland said of his captain. "You don't notice a lot of the thincs he does, but he guards, he rebounds, and just does a really nice job." Of his seniors as a whole, Niland multiple three-point record holder for the Lions, nailed three from downtown, including a three pointer in the closing minutes to help Behrend pull away for the victory. The senior duo combined for 8-13 from the field for 24 points.
