BLACK JACK!- The ace
pitcher of the AL West Division
Champion Chicago White Sox
Jack McDowell won the
American League Cy Young
Award. McDowell led the league
with 22 victories and over the
past four years he has been the
winningest pitcher in baseball
with 72 victories. In his 10
losses this year, the Sox scored
only a total of 15 runs. He is
the third White Sox pitcher to
win the award, and the first
since LaMarr Hoyt won it in
1983.
THREE RING CIRCUS-
In the NHL, the Chicago
Blackhawks, the New York
Rangers and the Hartford
Whalers made deals to get
players. The Rangers dealt
lames Patrick and Darren
Turcoltc for ficsty Blackhawk
Steve Larmcr plus Nick
Kyprcos and Barry Richter.
While the Whalers went for
speed and toughness by
acquiring Turcottc, Patrick and
Bryan Marchment. Finally, the
Blackhawks traded for young
players to get rid of the old,
high priced players. They got
young defensemen Eric
Weinrich and LW Patrick
Poulin.
REVENGE OR REPEAT-
Thc rematch between challenger
Evander Holyfield and and
champion Riddick Bowe is
slated for this Saturday. The
last time these two goliaths met
they fought a 12 round war in
which Riddick "Big Daddy"
Bowe won in a unanimous
decision. This time Holyfield
says he will fight smart and beat
Bowe over the course of the
fight. Look for another war. I
predict that Bowe will win by a
TKO in the eighth round. Bowe
has too much power for the
smaller Holyfield and even with
his heart, Holyfield will not be
able to last the entire night.

Deadlines are approaching for
two upcoming events in the
exciting intramural program.
The deadline for the intramural
3 vs. 3 basketball tournament, in
conjunction with Schick
Superhoops, is Friday, November
12 at 4:00 p.m. with play
starting November 16.
There is a men's and women's
division in the round robin
tournament, which will be
divided into different leagues.
two NFC east division leaders,
the surprising New York
Giants, led by Lawrence Taylor
and Phil Simms, against the
revitalized Dallas Cowboys with
Emmill Smith and Troy
Aikman. This is the game of
the year for the Giants. If they
win this game they could be
considered a legitimate contender
in the NFC, but they arc
playing the defending World
Champion Cowboys in Dallas.
The Cowboys’ running back
Emmill Smith is coming off
his best rushing day of his
career last week against
Philadelphia, when he rushed for
237 yards. My pick, look for
the Cowboys to win their sixth
straight game and take a hold of
the NFC east. Cowboys 35,
Giants 10.
RECORD BREAKER- Don
Shula needs to chalk up one
more win to surpass George
Hallas as the all-time
winningest coach in NFL
history with 325 wins. The task
this week will be a difficult one
because it seems every time the
Dolphins need a big win the
Jets arc in their way. The
Dolphins have a new leader this
week as their quarterback and his
name is Scott Mitchell. All he
has done is blitz the league with
his precision passing last week
he scorched the Kansas City
Chiefs with four touchdown
passes. This could be the week
the Dolphins ground the Jets
and take another step toward
getting to the Super Bowl.
8.Y.0.8.(8R1NG YOUR
OWN BASKETBALL)- On
Tuesday, November 9 in Erie
Hall the Behrend basketball
teams will be conducting the
third annual Open House at 7
p.m. The Open House
activities will include team
introductions, a three-point
competition, a slam-dunk
exhibition and other activities.
The Open House is a chance to
meet the two new first-year head
coaches, Roz Fomari and Joe
Shapiro.
The champions in the men's
and women's division are eligible
to go to Ohio State University to
compete' in a regional
competition.
Also, on slate in intramural
action is the bowling
tournament, which will be held at
Eastway Lanes on November 13.
The deadline is also November
12.
The divisions are men's and
women’s singles and men's,
women's, and coed teams. For

Freshman sweeper Brian
Hurley overcame personal
problems this week and helped
the Lions' men’s soccer team
record a 2-0 shutout against
Hilbert College. His effort earned
him the title of Athlete of the
Week.
Brian has been playing the
sweeper position for twelve years
now, and his presence against
Hilbert was definitely felt.
Hurley graduated from
Mercyhurst Prep High School in
Erie. He loves to run and play
basketball in his free time.
Most of Brian’s time is
dedicated to soccer. "I love this
sport more than anything.
There’s nothing I wouldn't do to
be able to play soccer," said
Brian.
The men’s soccer team is much
improved over last season. Brian
is proud of the team’s
accomplishments.
He said, "I think we're young
and talented. We just need one
more year to grow and come
together. I also believe that our
defense should all get credit for
me being named the Athlete of
the Week. They all did a superb
job this season."

The Lady Lions volleyball
team ended their 1993 season on
Thursday, October 28 when they
traveled to W&J for a tri-match.
The Lions’ first opponent was
W&J and they beat them 16-14,
15-9. Key players were Jonelle
Curtis who had 50 kill percent,
Carrie Grzejka with 37%, Jen
Taylor with 25%, and Jen Leone
with 22%.
Coach Jan Wilson was,
"excited to win this game. The
girls played well as a team.
They have matured as a team
and when it got close near the
end, they were able to hang in
there and win.”
The next opponent for the
Lions at the tri-match was

Week honors.
Coach Dan Perritano has been
impressed with Brian’s play.
Perritano said, "He’s a low-key
type of player. He lets his
actions speak for himself on the
field. He really is a superb
defenseman. He just has that

Bethany, who they beat 15-9,
15-8. Key players here were
Amy Stranahan with 50 kill
percent, Grzejka with 36%, and
Curtis with 33%.
The Lady Lions Finished the
season with a record of 16-17.
The first half of the season they
went 4-11 and the second half
they rebounded for a 12-6 mark.
For the first half of the season
the attack percent for the team
was 15%. They improved this
percentage by 13% in the second
half of the season to have 28
attack percent.
Coach Wilson believes if the
team would have been better
earlier they could have made it
to the playoffs. Wilson
commented, "Overall this has
been one of the best groups to
work with. We had a fun

season. The girls were
coachable and they listen. This
has been one of the best teams
in several years.”
According to Wilson,
experience pulled a lot of other
teams through to win. Next
year the Lions should be the
experienced ones. The team
will have two four-year letter
winners, and has a possibility
of having nine returners.
Wilson said, "If the returners
come back confident, believing
in themselves, and in good
condition, we can have a really
good season. We should have a
lot of kids who had a lot of
playing time this year back
again next year. I hope we can
start where we left off this
season."
