Page 10 Sports bits by Greg Kristen Collegian Staff BLACK JACK!- The ace pitcher of the AL West Division Champion Chicago White Sox Jack McDowell won the American League Cy Young Award. McDowell led the league with 22 victories and over the past four years he has been the winningest pitcher in baseball with 72 victories. In his 10 losses this year, the Sox scored only a total of 15 runs. He is the third White Sox pitcher to win the award, and the first since LaMarr Hoyt won it in 1983. THREE RING CIRCUS- In the NHL, the Chicago Blackhawks, the New York Rangers and the Hartford Whalers made deals to get players. The Rangers dealt lames Patrick and Darren Turcoltc for ficsty Blackhawk Steve Larmcr plus Nick Kyprcos and Barry Richter. While the Whalers went for speed and toughness by acquiring Turcottc, Patrick and Bryan Marchment. Finally, the Blackhawks traded for young players to get rid of the old, high priced players. They got young defensemen Eric Weinrich and LW Patrick Poulin. REVENGE OR REPEAT- Thc rematch between challenger Evander Holyfield and and champion Riddick Bowe is slated for this Saturday. The last time these two goliaths met they fought a 12 round war in which Riddick "Big Daddy" Bowe won in a unanimous decision. This time Holyfield says he will fight smart and beat Bowe over the course of the fight. Look for another war. I predict that Bowe will win by a TKO in the eighth round. Bowe has too much power for the smaller Holyfield and even with his heart, Holyfield will not be able to last the entire night. THE SHOWDOWN- This week in Dallas, it will be the I.M. update by Keith E. McFall Sports editor Deadlines are approaching for two upcoming events in the exciting intramural program. The deadline for the intramural 3 vs. 3 basketball tournament, in conjunction with Schick Superhoops, is Friday, November 12 at 4:00 p.m. with play starting November 16. There is a men's and women's division in the round robin tournament, which will be divided into different leagues. two NFC east division leaders, the surprising New York Giants, led by Lawrence Taylor and Phil Simms, against the revitalized Dallas Cowboys with Emmill Smith and Troy Aikman. This is the game of the year for the Giants. If they win this game they could be considered a legitimate contender in the NFC, but they arc playing the defending World Champion Cowboys in Dallas. The Cowboys’ running back Emmill Smith is coming off his best rushing day of his career last week against Philadelphia, when he rushed for 237 yards. My pick, look for the Cowboys to win their sixth straight game and take a hold of the NFC east. Cowboys 35, Giants 10. RECORD BREAKER- Don Shula needs to chalk up one more win to surpass George Hallas as the all-time winningest coach in NFL history with 325 wins. The task this week will be a difficult one because it seems every time the Dolphins need a big win the Jets arc in their way. The Dolphins have a new leader this week as their quarterback and his name is Scott Mitchell. All he has done is blitz the league with his precision passing last week he scorched the Kansas City Chiefs with four touchdown passes. This could be the week the Dolphins ground the Jets and take another step toward getting to the Super Bowl. 8.Y.0.8.(8R1NG YOUR OWN BASKETBALL)- On Tuesday, November 9 in Erie Hall the Behrend basketball teams will be conducting the third annual Open House at 7 p.m. The Open House activities will include team introductions, a three-point competition, a slam-dunk exhibition and other activities.
