Caps and Gowns: October 23, 1992 is the last
day for students to order caps/gowns from the book
store for the January 9, 1993 commencement.
Undergraduate keepsake cap and gown $15.00;
graduate cap and gown $30.00.
Truman Scholarship Due: Today is the deadline
to submit a preliminary application for the Truman
Scholarship. Contact Mari Trenkel, 898-6160, with
any questions.
Van Driver Needed: A driver is needed for the
Diehl tutoring program on Tuesdays 12:30 P.M.-
2:30 P.M. Must be 21 years of age and have a valid
driver's license. Contact Dave Sheilds 898-6171.
Flu Shots Available: Flu vaccine is now avail
able at the Health and Wellness Center for the 92-93
flu season. The cost is $B.OO per injection.
Education Abroad Deadline: The deadline for
Fall 1993 and full year 1993-94 PSU Education
Abroad Programs is November 1, 1992. Contact

Tempus Submissions Needed: The campus li
eterary magazine, Tempus, is looking for books and
submissions. Both can be dropped off at Chris
Dubbs office in the Carriage House West #6. The
annual book sale will be November 3-5 in Winter
garden.
Career Development Center Workshops:
Today the CDC is sponsoring a workshop dealing
with 'How to do a Government Job Search' while on
Wednesday, October 21, the topic will include writ
ing ’Resumes and Cover Letters.’ All workshops
are at 4:00 P.M. in the Reed Conference Room.
Pro-Life Community Gathering: On October
25, at 2:00 p.m. The Saint Stanislaus Pro-Life
Community is holding a gathering at the Parish
Convents at 517 East 12th Street. For more infor
mation call 452-3395.'
Open Reading: On Wednesday, October 21, the
Roundtable Society is sponsoring an open reading
from 5-7 p.m. in the Memorial Room of the Glenhill
Farmhouse. Everyone is welcome to read or listen.
Free Tutoring Available: All Behrend students
are welcome to utilize the Learning Assistance Cen
ter's services. Student and faculty tutors are on duty
daily offering help with many subjects. For more in
formation call 898-6014 or drop by the center located
in the South Cottage.
Society of Automotive Engineers: will meet
October 20, at 4:30 P.M. in the Reed Seminar Room.
New members are encouraged to attend.
Attention ODK Members: General membership
will meet tonight at 5:30 P.M. in the Reed Conference

Fall 1992 Retreat: The Catholic Campus Min
istry is sponsoring their annual retreat at Camp Notre
Dame this weekend. Registration fee is $lO.OO. For

Make a Difference in a Child's Life: Volun
teers to tutor children in grades 3,4, and 5 at Diehl
Elementary School. Tutors are needed for Tues.,
Wed., and Thur. 2:30-3:30 p.m. (must provide
transportation) and Wed. 9:55-10:55 a.m.

POETS from page 1
Getsi has won numerous
prestigious awards and grants in
poetry, including The Capricorn
for her recently published book,
Intensive Care, which details her
daughter's illness.
Getsi’s many accomplish
ments and various works have
been published in more than fifty
publications, from poetry
collections and journals to
anthologies and papers. She has
also been involved with
'Performance Poetry.'
"(Getsi) read at Behrend four
years ago and gave a fine and
inspired reading," said Diana
Hume George, Professor of
English and Women's Studies at
Behrend. "We’re glad to welcome
her back now that the poems she
read (at her last visit) have
become parts of her (published)
book."
Copies of her book, Intensive
Care, will be sold at the reading.
Prof George said, "The sale will
be the first for this collection
poetry, which Getsi was working
on at the time of her last Behrend
reading."
The other poet at next Tuesday
night's reading, Linnea Johnson,
is an Assistant Professor of
English at Muhlenberg College.
Before becoming Assistant
Professor, she held positions as a
Research Professor and as an
LVAIC Consortial Professor.
She began her teaching career
first as a tutor of English as a
Second Language and later as an
Instructor of English and a
Teaching Assistant.
Johnson has a BA in English,
an MA in Writing/ Women's
Studies, and a PhD in English.
She has written a collection of
poetry, with two more in the
works, has written a chapbook, a
collection of stories, and is
currently finishing her first
novel. She has also co-authored
three books.
Published in ten poetry
anthologies, over twenty journals
and one fiction anthology, and
having written essays and reviews
for over fifteen publications, she
has had a prolific writing career.
Her photographs have been
used in several publications,three
of which were printed as cover
photos for The Spoon river
Quarterly.
Johnson has presented eleven
papers, and has been involved

Indecent Exposure
On October 11, three students reported to Police and Safety
that a male student was exposing himself near the residence
halls.
Medical Assists
Police and Safety responded to the Wilson Picnic Grove on
October 10, to assist an employee who was injured while
taking down a tarp. He received first aid and was advised to
seek medical attention.
On October 5, a student was injured while playing soccer. He
was transported to Hamol Health Center by the Brooksidc Fire
Department.
Phone Cords Stolen From Student
Government Offices
The Police and Safety Department received a report that several
phone cords were stolen from the Student Government offices.
This incident is currently under investigation.
Harassment by Communication
The Police and Safety Department is continuing to receive a
number of reports from students receiving harassing phone
calls. This has become an ongoing problem. Incidents are
continuing to be investigated.

presented, and published literary
criticism on both Christina
Stead, and on Willa Cather.
She has been nominated for
three Pushcart Awards, has won
the Billee Murray Denny Award,
an Academy of American Poets
Award, and the Prairie Schooner
Fiction Award to name but a few.
She has also received grants from
the Arts Councils of Illinois,
Nebraska, and Pennsylvania.
Says Prof George, "I first read
her in The Spoon River Quarterly
which (Getsi) edits... I thought
the poems were wonderful. We
(Women Today) contacted her and
asked her to come and do a
reading." Notes George, "They

reunion for them."
Prof George, speaking for the
community of Women Today
members, said, "we're looking
forward to their visit."
For those interested in the
works of either poet, both will
have books for sale at the
reading. For those interested in
direct communication with
Johnson or Getsi, there will be a
reception in the Memorial Room
of Glenhill Farmhouse-the white
picket fence building near the
Theater-immediately following
the reading. All are encouraged
to attend what will prove to be,
to paraphrase Professor George's
words, a wonderful and
enlightening experience.
