The Collegian POETS from page 1 Getsi has won numerous prestigious awards and grants in poetry, including The Capricorn for her recently published book, Intensive Care, which details her daughter's illness. Getsi’s many accomplish ments and various works have been published in more than fifty publications, from poetry collections and journals to anthologies and papers. She has also been involved with 'Performance Poetry.' "(Getsi) read at Behrend four years ago and gave a fine and inspired reading," said Diana Hume George, Professor of English and Women's Studies at Behrend. "We’re glad to welcome her back now that the poems she read (at her last visit) have become parts of her (published) book." Copies of her book, Intensive Care, will be sold at the reading. Prof George said, "The sale will be the first for this collection poetry, which Getsi was working on at the time of her last Behrend reading." The other poet at next Tuesday night's reading, Linnea Johnson, is an Assistant Professor of English at Muhlenberg College. Before becoming Assistant Professor, she held positions as a Research Professor and as an LVAIC Consortial Professor. She began her teaching career first as a tutor of English as a Second Language and later as an Instructor of English and a Teaching Assistant. Johnson has a BA in English, an MA in Writing/ Women's Studies, and a PhD in English. She has written a collection of poetry, with two more in the works, has written a chapbook, a collection of stories, and is currently finishing her first novel. She has also co-authored three books. Published in ten poetry anthologies, over twenty journals and one fiction anthology, and having written essays and reviews for over fifteen publications, she has had a prolific writing career. Her photographs have been used in several publications,three of which were printed as cover photos for The Spoon river Quarterly. Johnson has presented eleven papers, and has been involved Police Re The Collegian Indecent Exposure On October 11, three students reported to Police and Safety that a male student was exposing himself near the residence halls. Medical Assists Police and Safety responded to the Wilson Picnic Grove on October 10, to assist an employee who was injured while taking down a tarp. He received first aid and was advised to seek medical attention. On October 5, a student was injured while playing soccer. He was transported to Hamol Health Center by the Brooksidc Fire Department. Phone Cords Stolen From Student Government Offices The Police and Safety Department received a report that several phone cords were stolen from the Student Government offices. This incident is currently under investigation. Harassment by Communication The Police and Safety Department is continuing to receive a number of reports from students receiving harassing phone calls. This has become an ongoing problem. Incidents are continuing to be investigated. and performance poetry. Her articles, essays, and scholarship concern the politics of poetry and of pedagogy, and the political construction of woman, motherhood, and marriage; she has written, presented, and published literary criticism on both Christina Stead, and on Willa Cather. She has been nominated for three Pushcart Awards, has won the Billee Murray Denny Award, an Academy of American Poets Award, and the Prairie Schooner Fiction Award to name but a few. She has also received grants from the Arts Councils of Illinois, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania. Says Prof George, "I first read her in The Spoon River Quarterly which (Getsi) edits... Prof George, speaking for the community of Women Today members, said, "we're looking forward to their visit." For those interested in the works of either poet, both will have books for sale at the reading. For those interested in direct communication with Johnson or Getsi, there will be a reception in the Memorial Room of Glenhill Farmhouse-the white picket fence building near the Theater-immediately following the reading. All are encouraged to attend what will prove to be, to paraphrase Professor George's words, a wonderful and enlightening experience.
