"It's not that the team is
down, but we haven't been lucky,
and it is hurting our confidence,"
explained Baseball Coach Mike
Bari on the struggles of his
young baseball team.
The Lions lost two games to
RIT at home last Monday by the
scores of 2-1 in the opener and
10-2 in the second game.

The Lions season continued to slide
downhill as they dropped two more
matches this past weekend. The netters
are 1-3.
Westminster earned an 8-1 victory
over Behrend last Saturday afternoon.
The lone win for the Lions came in
doubles play when Mitch Janowski
teamed up with Joe Spangler to defeat
John Walco-John Bridges, (5-7, 6-2, 6-

The Titans avenged last year’s 5-4
loss to the Lions.
This drastic turnaround can be
attributed to the absence of the top seed.
Bill Schmitt, from the Westminster
match. Coach Mike Grignol was forced
to adjust all of the team's seeds to play
higher ranked opponents. Ken Gierl,
who is the number three seed, was

one for three.
Behrend's hottest hitter right
now is Cerqua who is batting
.467 for the year, and is six for
11 in the last three games.
"Cerqua has been doing the
damage,” said Bari on the play of
his first baseman.
RIT scored the first run of the
game in the sixth inning, but the
Lions quickly tied the game in
the bottom half of the inning.
RIT scored the winning run in
the seventh frame, while Bchrend
went quietly in their half of the
inning.
In the second game of the
twinbill, RIT jumped all over
Bchrend pitcher Joe Mason.
RIT scored six runs in the
second inning to take a
commanding lead that they
wouldn't give up to win, 10-2.
Mason got credit for pitching
one inning and was touched up
for four runs on four hits.
Mason walked one batter and had
one strikeout.
Weimer pitched six innings in
relief and let in six runs, four of
squad suffers
on home courts
which were earned runs. Weimer
struckout four, walked three
batters, and allowed six hits.
Cerqua batted two for two for
the game scoring a run and also
drived in a run for the Lions.
Centerfielder Jim Goard scored
the other run for Behrend in the
fourth inning.
Last Saturday, the Lions split
a doublcheader against SUNY-
Fredonia at home.
Behrend lost the first game, 6-
3, but came back to win the
second game by a score of 3-2.
In the opener, Freshman Scott
Frantz started for the Lions,
pitching six innings and allowing
five runs on seven hits. Frantz
struckout five and had only one

Although the loss of Schmitt was a
setback, all of the players still performed
well. Four of the five matches went the
full three sets.
On Sunday, the difficult losses
continued with a defeat by the Rochester
Institute of Technology. RIT crushed the
host Lions by an 8-1 score.
Chuck Keenan saved a sweep by
winning his singles match. Keenan
overcame a horrendous start in the first
set, in which he lost 6-0, and won the
next two sets to win the match.
Schmitt's match typified the weekend
for the netters. Schmitt won the first set,
7-6, by taking the tiebreaker. The second
set was also close, with Schmitt on the
short end of a 6-4 score. Schmitt ran out
of gas in the third and was defeated, 6-0.
The Lions were on the road yesterday
at Geneva College. Their next home
game will be Thursday against Indiana

Lady Lions rout Thiel
and Pitt-Bradford to
start four game streak
by Robert Kitchen
Collegian Staff Writer
The Lady Lions have been
tearing the cover off of the ball
lately, and the pitching has been
just as good. The result has been
a four game winning streak.
The 1990 women's softball
team easily defeated Thiel
College in both games of a
doubleheader on April 8.
In game one, Behrend blanked
Thiel 10-0 in five innings on the
strength of pitcher Erika
Renwick's one-hitter. The Lady
Lions defense was also superb,
committing no errors. Renwick
struckout five and walked none.
Banker's squad is 5-1 and is on a four
game winning streak after losing the
season opener.
The only baserunner for Thiel got
on by virtue of an infield hit.
Erica Scribner led the
offensive attack with three hits,
including a double and a triple,
and four runs batted in.
The Lady Lions blasted the
hosts in the second game, 20-1.
Beth Balizet weaved a two-hitter
for her first victory of the year.
Balizet recorded five strikeouts in
five innings.
Scribner was again hot at the
plate, cracking four hits in five
trips and knocking in three runs.
Tammy Altsman, Michelle
Hoover, and Melanie Dunn each
had three hits.

Next, the Lady Lions traveled
to Pitt-Bradford, where they
completed another sweep. The
first game lasted five innings,
with Behrend on top of the Lady
Panthers, 14-2.
Renwick and Balizet teamed to
pitch a three-hitter. Renwick got
credit for her second win of the
year.
Behrend blanked Pitt-Bradford
10-0 in game two. Michelle
Hoover pitched four innings and
Balizet pitched one to combine
for a no-hitter.
At the plate, Dunn and Jen
Mowris collected two hits apiece.
According to Softball Coach
Brett Banker, pre-season exercises
done by the team are now paying
off for the offense. "We have
been hitting the ball extremely
hard," said the second year coach.
The exercises emphasized upper
body strength.
NOTES: Banker's squad is 5-
1 and is on a four game winning
streak after losing the season
opener....ln their last four games,
Behrend has "10-runned" their
opponent to play only five
innings The Lady Lions have
allowed only 14 runs in six
games....Renwick has only
allowed four hits in 17 innings
pitched.
