The Collegian Wednesday, March 21,1990 Sports Men's baseball Lions off to start on the by Tony Viola Collegian Staff Writer The Behrend baseball team is off to another rocky begining, and the usual causes are there. A tough schedule and an inability to get quality practice time due to the weather has slowed their development. The Lions have lost two doubleheaders on the young season for a disappointing 0-4 start. Behrend went on their second road trip of the year this past weekend playing Shenandoah College and Gettysburg College in Virginia. The twinbill against Shenandoah on Saturday was cancelled due to bad weather conditions. On Sunday, the Lions lost both games to Gettysburg by scores of 9-0 and 12-0. Gettysburg had already played 12 games, posting a 5-5-2 record before hosting the doubleheader against the Lions. Captain Ray Cerqua, the top pitcher in the rotation, started for Behrend in ths opening game. ANNOUNCING... Reed Lecture Hall a rough diamond Cerqua had a strong performance for the Lions, pitching five of the seven innings. Cerqua had seven strike outs in his season debut. Freshman Scott Frantz pitched in relief of Cerqua when Gettysburg scored five runs in the Fifth inning. Frantz gave up two runs in relief. On the offensive side, Behrend was led by freshman John Terrill, who collected two hits in four at bats for the doubleheader. Terrill is hitting .333 for the young Lion season. Another bright spot for Behrend is Freshman Chris Myers, who is also helping out the offense. Myers has two hits in nine trips to the plate so far this year. Sophomore Kirk McKinney is doing an outstanding job batting lead off. McKinney has three walks on the season and has an on base percentage of .420, which leads the team. Baseball Coach Mike Bari said, "These trips were to evaluate what we could do because we are still in the preseason stage." COVER APRIL 3-4. 1990 Women's softball Pressure is on Lady Lions to repeat success of 18-win season Team ranked sixth in the region by Robert Kitchen Collegian Staff Writer The 1990 women's softball team is looking forward to a very promising season this year. The Lady Lions have been ranked 6th in the NCAA Central Region Pre-Season Poll, which spans 10 states. This is the first time in school history that they have appeared in the Regional poll. Brett Banker will be head coach this year for his second year of coaching at Behrend. In his first year of coaching at Behrend, he guided the team to a record breaking 18-U season. This is a school record for wins in a season. Because of these 18 wins, Behrend received their first ever Eastern College Athletic Conference postseason bid in softball. The 'B9 squad's 18 win mailt surpassed the win total of the previous four years combined. The team has eight returning letter winners. Strengths for the team include an experienced pitching staff and a solid core fo hitters. Weaknesses include speed and depth. The best offensive player this year will How does the Behrend administration stay informed on what's happening around campus? By reading Behrend Briefs each week in The Collegian, (see page 2) be Erica Scribner. Scribner led the team last year in hitting with a .347 average. Best defensive players include Melanie Dunn, Jen Mowris, and Beth Balizet. Starting pitchers this year are Erica Renwick, Balizet, and Michelle Hoover. Coach Banker wants to "continue to develop our quality college program" and to "continue to increase our recognition in the Region." He plans to "build a program here that's quality each and every year." Banker further says "there isn't any real excuse; not to have a successful season, outside of injuries." He also adds, "expectations are much higher going into the season than last year. They know what it takes, they just have to perform." NOTES: The lady lions open their season against Mt. Union on March 24th in an away game.... The team practices five times a week, two hours at a time.... Assistant coaches this year are Lisa Butch and John Weston....
