Madison discusses career as senior season ends
by Robert Kitchen
Collegian Staff Writer
Michele Madison has
rewritten the record books at 1
Behrend.
She is now the all-time
leader in scoring and
rebounding. Madison has
surpassed the 1104 points by
Sue Holmes (1983-86) and
the 623 rebounds by Natalie
Kuhn (1979-83).
Madison is a S'lO"
forward and is a senior this
year. This is her fourth
season for Behrend and has
been a starter for the past
three years and the latter pan
of her freshman year.
Madison began playing
basketball in die seventh
grade. She was introduced to
the sport by her brother and
her friends.
Madison attended
Bradford Central Christian
High, a small private school
in Bradford, Pa. Madison
says that playing at Bradford

pretty similar, and that made

Lady Lions fall to
Division 111 Number
One St. John Fisher
by Robert Kitchen
Collegian Staff Writer
The Lady Lions have found
that its not any safer outside of
Erie Hall.
After a tough loss to
Buffalo State on January 22, the
lady hoopsters went on the road
in search of their seventh victory
of the season. So far the road has
been harsh, with losses to Grove
City College (last Wednesday)
and St John Fisher. Unless they
come up with a win at Oberlin
College tonight, they are in
danger of coming home with a 6-
13 record.
"We had more talent
than Grove City and
definitely should
have won that
game."

Against St. John Fisher on
Monday night, the lady cagers ran
into the immovable object The
hosting Lady Cardinals, the
number one team in NCAA
Division 111, won their 19th
consecutive game by a
convincing BS-S8 score.
The Lady Cards had a big
advantage at the charity snipe,
making 26-of-35 foul shots.
the college level a lot easier.
Ironically, Michele said she
wasn't the "star" for the
Bradford team. She wasn't
even sure she would play
basketball beyond the high
school level.
In making her decision to
attend college at Behrend,
Madison replied, "I thought
a Penn State degree would
be the best for me." Coming
from a small school, she
liked Behrend's atmosphere
and smaller classrooms.
As Coach Jenepher
Banker took to the scene as
the new head coach for the
women's team at the start of
the 'BB-89 season, Michele
said, "It was a hard
adjustment and it took awhile
to get used to her style." She
said Coach Banker has really
helped her out a lot Madison
said of Banker's coaching
style, "She wants to win,
and that's what Behrend
needs."
When asked about team
unity, Michele says they all
get along and there are no

Michele Madison (14), Lisa
Dorenkamp (11), and Darcie
Bradley (10) reached double
figures scoring for the ladies.
The women's basketball team
suffered a 54-51 loss to the Grove
City Lady Wolverines at Grove
City on January 24. The game
was the first of a three-game road
swing.
The Lady Lions were up 26-
22 at the end of the first half, but
were out scored by the host Lady
Wolverines, 32-25, in period
two.
Madison led Behrend's offense
with 17 points. Madison said,
"No one was moving on offense
and we were lazy on defense. We
had more talent than Grove City
and definitely should have won
that game."
Freshman Lori Nadolny
comments on the Grove City
game by saying, "We weren’t
playing to our potential" and "We
were all disappointed."
Behrend's current record is 6-
12. The Lady Lions travel to
Oberlin College today for a 7:30
pm game. The women cagers
will return to Erie Hall this
Saturday afternoon for a tilt with
Elmira College. Game time is 4
pm.
NOTES: Madison was
named to the Eastern Collegiate
Athletic Conference honor roll
for the third consecutive week.
problems. Even though
Madison may tally up the
most numbers in the box
score, she knows that the
contribution of her
teammates is important. She
says, "If it weren't for
teammates, it (the scoring
and rebounding records)
wouldn't mean anything. It's
totally team."
Madison says her family
has been very supportive in
her athletic career. Her
parents play an important
role and come to see her play
whenever they can.
A message Madison
wants to get across to
freshman team members is
that "We're a good team and
we have a bright future. By
the time they're seniors
they're going to be awesome
if they stay with it."
Madison says that
everyone should definitely
get involved in collegiate
sports. She focuses on the
aspect of seeing different
places where she hasn't been
and meeting new people.
She also says, "It has kept

me in good shape."
Out of many possible
choices for her most
memorable sports memory at
Behrend, Madison has
chosen two.
The first one was as a
freshman against Buffalo
State. Behrend was loosing
by 15 at the half. They came
back to win in the second
half, with Madison canning
the game-winning shot.
The second memorable
moment was against
Mercyhurst College during
her sophomore year. In this
contest, Madison fouled out
early hi the second half, hut
that is not why the game is
special to her. It gave her a
chance to sit on the bench
and "watch the team come
together and win”
What does the future hold
for Madison? She says after
graduation she is going to
look for a job in the
management field. Madison
clearly points out that she
will be involved somewhere
in sports in the years to
come.
