Reporter looks at chaos in the sciences
(continued from page 1)
Although "science is as
important to American's lives as
politics," in Gleick's estimation,
he's surprised by "how little we
really know." Saying "ideas from
science have the power to change
our lives," he believes that
people can benefit from the
insights that chaos theories can
offer into complex systems in
various fields such as population
biology, theoretical physics, and
economics.
In fact, Gleick says, what
chaos research tells us about
unpredictability and randomness
can help in dealing with larger
questions of "determinism and
free will."
In his book and speaking
engagements, Gleick discusses
developments in "the science of
chaos" as far back as the turn of
the century, but with an

discoveries in widely disparate
fields which have gone into
forming the science of chaos.
Each section is an anecdotal
account of the process through
which chaotic principles showed
'themselves in the work of
individual researchers.
Since the publication of his
book in 1987, Gleick - has
gathered new material for :his
speeches. Some of -the topics -he
hopes to address include
discoveries of chaotic phenomena
in physiology, such as heart
arrhythmia and the branching of
the circulatory system, and new
insights into natural events such
as the flocking of birds.
As part of the 1989-90
Speaker Series, Gleick will
appear tomorrow night at 8 pm
in the Reed Lecture Hall.
