Lady spikers take two in
home tri-match with SUNY-
Fredonia and Pitt-Bradford
by Me Lesher
Collegian Staff Writer
The Behrend women's
volleyball team had an up and
down week, as they swept their
home matches against Pitt-
Bradford and SUNY-Fredonia last
Thursday. The girls didn't fair so
well in the Alfred Tournament
held in Alfred, New York,
finishing in last place.
The lady spikers played very
well Thursday, first by beating
Pitt-Bradford (15-2; 9-15, 15-0)
and then completing the sweep
by defeating SUNY-Fredonia (15-
10, 15-11)1
Behrend served well as a
team, with a total of twelve aces
in the match. Amy - Karmazon had
an excellent night serving,
especially against Pitt-Bradford,
as seven of her twenty-one serves
were aces.

Against SUNY-Fredonia,
Behrend totaled eight serving aces
while Michelle Mallory and Erica
Scribner contributed to the
winning cause by teaming up for
twelve kill spikes. Pam
Allshouse led the sqUad with
seventeen setting assists for the
night.
Coach Janet Wilson summed
up the sweep when she said, "The
girls are working together better
as a team- (there is) a lot more
communication on the floor."
She also added that the girls are
starting to find the opponents
weaknesses, and exploiting them.
The Lady Lions had a much
tougher time in the Alfred
Tournament. Behrend dropped the
opening match in the single
elimination tournament to
SUNY-Oneonta. The lady spikers
also came out on the short .end
facing Rochester Institute of
This improved the Lions record
to 3-4 on the season and helped
them close out a successful 2-1
homestand. Despite the lone loss,
Head Coach Herb Lauffer thinks
the team realizes now that they
can play consistently well and
win.
Said Lauffer, "In spite of the
lack of scoring, we played well.
We had more shots on goal and
corner kicks than Brockport."
Technology (RIT) and Nazareth
College, who won 15-5, 15-10
and 10-15, 15-8, 17-15
respectively.
There were some bright spots
for the Lady Lions. Mallory led
the Behrend squad with eighteen
kill spikes. Scribner paced the
girls with four serving aces,
while Allshouse and Kellie
Jordan each added three serving
aces. Karmazon had twenty-four
setting assists.
Coach Wilson was
disappointed in the lack of
intensity displayed by the girls,
especially in the morning
matches. She said that Behrend
was inconsistent in their
matches, but that the squad
played with much more
determination in the Nazareth
match.

Sophomore Sam Condeluci
opened the scoring with 33:54
left in the first half as Jeff Varcoe
gave a perfect pass to the wide
open Condeluci.
At the 14:57 mark of the
second half, Filoon increased the
Lion lead to 2-0 on a good pass
from sophomore fullback Jay
Varcoe past Bengal goalie Tony
Giannichi.
Filoon then helped to finish off
Buffalo State when he assisted on
Behrend's third goal of the game a
blast by senior Mike Mihaillce.
Mihalke's insurance goal inside
the far post increased the .Lion's
lead to three.
Senior Scott Ensminger's goal
with 16:32 left in the game broke
Hahn's shut out bid. Bengal
Chris Marasco assisted on the
goal. -
For the Lions, Hahn was once
again strong in goal. When asked
to comment on the game, he was
quick to credit his teammates
and downplay the opposition.
"We expected Buffalo State
to be a relatively weak team,
compared to how they did
against teams we already
played," said the Lions
netminder. "Sometimes when
we have been faced with this
situation, we seem to get
complacent and fall into a
habit of being individuals.
However, this was not the
case today and the entire team
deserves a lot of credit."
On Saturday the Lions
traveled to Brockport where
they were shutout in a close
game, 2-0.

game, 2-0. The Lions had many
scoring opportunities, but
couldn't put the ball between the
goalposts.
Brockport score the first goal
33 minutes into the opening half.
Matt Haberl chipped the ball in
from twenty yards out. •
The second goal came with 50
seconds left in the game. The
score came after Behrend had
applied pressure to the Brockport
defense in trying to score the
game-tying goal.
As the Lions quickly approach
the second half of the season,
Hahn believes the team and it's
record will only improve. •
Hahn said, "Provided we avoid
anymore injuries and are able to
get some guys back who are
already hurt, I really believe we'll
be solid the rest of the way,
because we've finally jelled
together as a team."
