The Conegian Wednesday, October 4, 1989 Lady spikers take two in home tri-match with SUNY- Fredonia and Pitt-Bradford by Me Lesher Collegian Staff Writer The Behrend women's volleyball team had an up and down week, as they swept their home matches against Pitt- Bradford and SUNY-Fredonia last Thursday. The girls didn't fair so well in the Alfred Tournament held in Alfred, New York, finishing in last place. The lady spikers played very well Thursday, first by beating Pitt-Bradford (15-2; 9-15, 15-0) and then completing the sweep by defeating SUNY-Fredonia (15- 10, 15-11)1 Behrend served well as a team, with a total of twelve aces in the match. Behrend won the game, 3-1. s p c)rts Against SUNY-Fredonia, Behrend totaled eight serving aces while Michelle Mallory and Erica Scribner contributed to the winning cause by teaming up for twelve kill spikes. Pam Allshouse led the sqUad with seventeen setting assists for the night. Coach Janet Wilson summed up the sweep when she said, "The girls are working together better as a team- (there is) a lot more communication on the floor." She also added that the girls are starting to find the opponents weaknesses, and exploiting them. The Lady Lions had a much tougher time in the Alfred Tournament. Behrend dropped the opening match in the single elimination tournament to SUNY-Oneonta. The lady spikers also came out on the short .end facing Rochester Institute of This improved the Lions record to 3-4 on the season and helped them close out a successful 2-1 homestand. Despite the lone loss, Head Coach Herb Lauffer thinks the team realizes now that they can play consistently well and win. Said Lauffer, "In spite of the lack of scoring, we played well. We had more shots on goal and corner kicks than Brockport." Technology (RIT) and Nazareth College, who won 15-5, 15-10 and 10-15, 15-8, 17-15 respectively. There were some bright spots for the Lady Lions. Mallory led the Behrend squad with eighteen kill spikes. Scribner paced the girls with four serving aces, while Allshouse and Kellie Jordan each added three serving aces. Karmazon had twenty-four setting assists. Coach Wilson was disappointed in the lack of intensity displayed by the girls, especially in the morning matches. She said that Behrend was inconsistent in their matches, but that the squad played with much more determination in the Nazareth match. r • - _ Sophomore Sam Condeluci opened the scoring with 33:54 left in the first half as Jeff Varcoe gave a perfect pass to the wide open Condeluci. At the 14:57 mark of the second half, Filoon increased the Lion lead to 2-0 on a good pass from sophomore fullback Jay Varcoe past Bengal goalie Tony Giannichi. Filoon then helped to finish off Buffalo State when he assisted on Behrend's third goal of the game a blast by senior Mike Mihaillce. Mihalke's insurance goal inside the far post increased the .Lion's lead to three. Senior Scott Ensminger's goal with 16:32 left in the game broke Hahn's shut out bid. Bengal Chris Marasco assisted on the goal. - For the Lions, Hahn was once again strong in goal. When asked to comment on the game, he was quick to credit his teammates and downplay the opposition. "We expected Buffalo State to be a relatively weak team, compared to how they did against teams we already played," said the Lions netminder. "Sometimes when we have been faced with this situation, we seem to get complacent and fall into a habit of being individuals. However, this was not the case today and the entire team deserves a lot of credit." On Saturday the Lions traveled to Brockport where they were shutout in a close game, 2-0. The Lions had many scoring opportunities, but couldn't put the ball between the goalposts. Brockport score the first goal 33 minutes into the opening half. Matt Haberl chipped the ball in from twenty yards out. • The second goal came with 50 seconds left in the game. The score came after Behrend had applied pressure to the Brockport defense in trying to score the game-tying goal. As the Lions quickly approach the second half of the season, Hahn believes the team and it's record will only improve. • Hahn said, "Provided we avoid anymore injuries and are able to get some guys back who are already hurt, I really believe we'll be solid the rest of the way, because we've finally jelled together as a team."
