A Darkey's Sorrow.
"If the town of Salem, In Massachu.
setts," a!d Bob Iillllngsby, "thinks she
has the onliest witches In this country,
all I got to say about It is that she la
simply mistaken. Now, there was old
Brother McUraw and old Bister Hut
ton'' Bob's story, lu short, was thus: Old
Brother McGraw and old Bister Hutton
were members of Philip's Bridge Church.
Brother McOraw was a consistent
member, but old Sister Hutton, to say
the truth, was regarded somewhat as a
heathen, and even addicted to witchcraft.
A calf of Brother McQraw's, of uncom
mon promise, dwindled In spite of un
common pains, and Anally died, and the
good man, persuaded in his mind that
his neighbor, although a spiritual sister,
had bewitched It, set out In his wrath for
her house, and taklug her by the head,
gave her a violent wrench. Sister Hut
ton reported the case to the church ? and
at the Conference one Saturday, Brother
McGraw, being mildly remonstrated
with, went so far as to say that he would
have to think about It. The Moderator
blandly suggested to him to withdraw
for a few moments, retire into the woods,
reflect, and pray over the matter. He
did so. ' On returning, the Moderator
and the bretheren were gratified to ob
serve the cairn regret that was visible
upon his countenance. This Moderator
was a man of power, both as to Intellect
and character. It was Silas Mercer.
Then this dialogue ensued :
Mr. Mercer: "Well, Brother McGraw,
I see you've returned, and I think
you've come to a just conclusion in the
matter about which you have been re
fleeting." He looked Inquiringly at the
aged brother, and the aged brother an
swered his inquiring look with meek
silence. "I think you feel sorry, Broth
er McGraw," suggested Mr. M., in a
kindly, leading tone.
"Yes. Brer Moderator," answered the
aged brother, "wery sorry; I'm wery
sorry."
Yet there was some gruffness in his
tone, which led the Moderator to doubt
the nature of his regret. "Brother
McGraw," baid he, "will you let the
church know what sort of eorrow it is
you feel 'i Is it a godly sorrow, Brother
McGraw?"
Then the aged brother lifted high hU
head, looked the Moderator full in the
face, and answered, l-Ircr Moderator,
I'm sorry I'm wery sorry that I '
didn't break her neck." Editoh's
DrtAWKit, in Harper's Magazine for
August.
What do You Say ?
Our Professor, was discoursing on the
subject of identity. He held up a jack
knife and said, " If I should lose the '
blade of this knife, Mr. Higginbotham,
and should have a new one put in pluce
of it, this would still be the same knife,
would it not, sir? "It would, sir," said
Higginbotham. "And if I should then
lose the handle and replace it, it would
be the same?" "Certainly, tir." "Very'
good," said the Professor, uud marked
him ten. "Pofessor'.said I, "suppose
now that I should find the first blade
and the lirst handle and put them togeth
er, what knife would that be ?"
g"Up in Franklin, Venango county,
Pa., Patrick M. was an honest, hard
working Irishman, illiterate rather, but
not Ignorant. He joined the Episcopal '
church, was confirmed and instituted
the observance of family worship. His
wife had been a school teacher, and of
course,.was educated. One day Patrick
was reading in Luke, I think, about Laz
arus. He read while bis wife was listen
ing: "And the beggar died, and was car
ried by aigles Into Abraham's bosom."
'Not eagles, Patrick," said his wife,
'but angels." Patrick was always im
patient of contradiction, so looking over
his spectacles at his wife, be replied:
"Do 111 the odds, Hetty, so long as he got
there," and went on with his worship.
tSflle was a printer, and he wentinto
a millinery store to buy a breakfast cap
for bis sUter. He stated his want and
then fell to musing. "What kind of a
cap would you wish ?" queried the love
ly female that waited upon him. He
roused himself from bis reverie and an-
swered: "Nonpareil full-face italic cap."
She had served a year in a printing-ofllce
and she tumbled, so to speak. "Min
ion 1" she exclaimed, "I know better;
you want something primer." Then
he smiled and said he would let the cap
go and take an M brace ; where upon she
blushed and said she would have to
prove him first, after which she would
have no objection to his locking up her
form in his M brace. That finished the
business. No cards.
