tW An Englishman who went to see
an Irish friend, knocked at the street,
door and asked, " Does Mr. McOuIre'

dead!" " When did he die?" "If he'd
lived till tomorrow, he'd have been
dead a fortnight," was the response.
KTA young lady admitted to her

" And what did you do I" asked the

rf5T"My brethren," said a Western
minister, " the preaching of the gospel
to some people Is like pouring water
over a sponge it soaks in and stays.
To others it is like the wind blowing
through a chicken coop. My experience
of this congregation is that it contains
more chicken coops than sponges."
CA clergyman once, while reading
the burial service, came to the place
where he must say "deceased brother
(or sister)." He did not know which;
so, turning to a morner, he asked
whether it was a "brother or sister."
The mourner innocently said, " No
relation at all, sir; only an acquaint
ance." 3TFashlon Is often the result of acci

off the other day and was run over by
a horee car, a hack and a wheelbarrow,
besides being stepped upon four times,
before she recovered it. She bad to
wear it home, though, and seven milli

style and went to making hats with
just such jams in them, and they went
off like hot cakes. ..
A Silent Partner.
Xr. X is an eminent physician of
Philadelphia, and as is often the case
with eminent physicians, is brusque and
overbearing in manner. Among bis
office patients one morning was a gen
tleman who, after- occupying exactly
five minutes of the great man's time,
took a ten dollar note from his pocket
and inquired the amount of the fee.
"Fifty dollars," said the impatient
medical man. The patient demurred a
little, whereupon the physician rudely
remarked: "Well what do you expect
to pay ? Give me what yea have got,"
and on receiving the ten dollar note
turned scornfully to bis negro servant
and banding the money remarked;
"That is for you, Jim;"-but lost bis
temper still more when bis patient
coolly said: "I did not know before
that you bad a partner. Good morn
ing, doctor."
The Dutchman Wins.
In the Legislature of Ohio, gome
years ago, there was a warm dispute
whether a. certain proposed lailroad
should commence at a certain point
down or at a certain other point up the
river. " Who ever beard," said a down
the-river advocate, "of beginning ant,
thing at the top'i Who ever beard of
building a chimney from the top down

at the top ?"
Up jumped a Dutch member from an
